3 Significance Liturgical Significance Holy Week/Good Friday Since the 16 th Century Intention required to speak the words. Asphyxiation on the cross. Required effort. Jesus’ true colors. Suffering brings out what’s important to a person.

4 First Word Luke 23:34 “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” What do you think is the significance of this? Forgiveness is extended to his torturers. Jesus is brother to the tortured, and forgiver to the torturer.

5 First Word “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” Ask yourself… Do you take time on a regular basis to confess your sins so that you might enjoy the freedom of forgiveness? Do you really believe God has forgiven your sins?

6 Second Word Luke 23:43 “I assure you, today you will be with me in paradise.” What do you think is the significance of this? Paradise? Septuagint denotes garden/forest The place of bliss between death and resurrection. Admission into paradise?

7 Second Word “I assure you, today you will be with me in paradise.” Where do we go when we die? Paradise Resurrection “Heaven” Have you done what the thief has done?

10 Third Word John 19:26-27 “Woman here is your son… Here is your mother.” What do you think is the significance of this? What does it reveal about Jesus/God? How do you think Mary felt that day? Family relationships in the kingdom… how do they work? What about Matthew 10:34-39? Luke 8:21-22?
