4 This section examines the purposes of Ancient Greek drama. Describe what the Ancient Greek city-states were. Describe why Athens was important as a center of arts and politics. Evaluate the original religious role of the plays.

5 This section focuses on how the performances were staged. Describe the parts of the theater and stage itself. Explain the use of scenery, costumes and props, including the famous masks. Evaluate the role of the Chorus and how it changed over time.

6 This section evaluates Aristotle’s view of tragedy. Describe each part of the structure in a tragedy. List the characteristics of the tragic hero. Explain the ideas of catharsis, hamartia and hubris.

7 This section will identify and describe the basic elements of the story. Briefly describe the main characters/performers: Chorus, Oedipus, Tiersias, Jocasta, Creon, the Priest, and the Shepherd. Explain how fate and hamartia are important in the play.

8 Document all your resources for the assignment. Use at least two resources. At least one source should be a data base. No unapproved sources may be used. Do not use Google, Wikipedia, etc.
