4. Introduction Once Upon a Pre- Pharmacy Time is brought to you by the Research and Education Committee of the Pre- Pharmacy Club at UC Davis. Our presentation will tell the story of a UCD Pre-Pharmacy student and their journey to pursue a career in pharmacy. The purpose of our presentation is to: address common questions express importance of planning for now and the future provide examples of the challenges typically experienced in the career of pharmacy restate previous R&E presentation goals and objectives Our presentation hopes to be both informative and humorous, but in no way represents the journey and obstacles that each student will face in their pursuit of becoming a successful pharmacist.

Chapter 1 It’s important to note that although you may not know a lot about pharmacy, there are many opportunities for you to learn about the career through: courses o Pre-Requisites are important! o check online, website, or the HSA adviser (petition) Internships/volunteer opportunities o ICC Involvement with Pre-Pharmacy Club Student-run clinics Pre-Health clubs on campus Our story begins with two UC Davis students leaving the first R&E Meeting at Life Sciences 1022. Once they arrive to their dorm room, one student begins to express concerns about their future as a pre-pharmacy student at UCD.

6. Chapter 2 A few years have passed, and one of the students has successfully received admission to pharmacy school. He is now on his rotation at Rong-Aid. However, another obstacle has arisen…. what are some of the issues regarding malpractice in the workplace? Malpractice is certainly a reality that all healthcare professionals face. Malpractice insurance is available to protect your financial well-being. Luckily, mistakes are rare due to the intensive training you will receive in pharmacy school.

7. Chapter 3 Every pharmacy student will experience both the best and the worst patients on-the-job....But the best customers will always make you smile. Keep in mind that those who are in need of healthcare may not be feeling their best. However, as a healthcare professional, it is our responsibility to care for our patients. Thankful or not, it is worth every minute because of the difference it makes.

8. Chapter 4 The job market can be tough for any career, not just pharmacy. There is saturation in areas, but pharmacy is expected to grow faster than average due to new policies, such as, the Affordable Care Act. The Affordable Care Act will enroll more people into the healthcare system through its marketplaces. The Baby Boomer generation will be retiring, adding elderly who need more healthcare to the system. Upon graduation, two recent Pharm.D. graduates celebrate their success. However, is the job market worth celebrating...?

9. Chapter 5 One day, two full fledged pharmacists working at Rong-Aid begin to ponder about their career choice. Is there more to pharmacy...? To retail? Or not to retail…? Residency refers to a pharmacy student’s post graduate training to specialize in a field of their interest and more experience. Retail pharmacy is typically the first field in pharmacy that most will associate pharmacists with. There is a great variety of other fields to pursue, including: Clinical, Nuclear, Pediatric, Ambulatory Care…
