Battle of Bull Run Took place in July 1861 Confederacy was led by Stonewall Jackson In this battle, the Union tried to advance on the South in Virginia. The Union thought they would have an easy victory, but the South was able to hold their ground and defeat the Union

Battle of Antietam This battle took place in September of 1862 General Lee attempted to attack the Union on their home soil in Maryland. However prior to the battle he lost his battle plans and they were turned over to the Union General McClellan. As a result, Lee was not able to defeat the Union, because the Union was able to withstand Lee’s attack.

Battle of Shiloh This battle took place in April of 1862 General Grant’s plan was for the Union to take control of the Mississippi River. General Grant was surprised by the Confederates and suffered heavy losses on the first day of the battle. However, he refused to retreat and on the second day the North defeated the South. This turned out to be one of the bloodiest battles in the Civil War.

Battle of Fredericksburg This battle took place in December of 1862 Union General Ambrose Burnside tried to attack General Lee outside of Fredericksburg, Virginia. Lee had his troops retreat and set up in the defensive position in Fredericksburg. As the Union soldiers advanced they were gunned down by Lee’s troops. This was the North’s worst defeat.

Battle of Chancellorsville This battle took place in May of 1863 Stonewall Jackson and his men defeated the Union in two days at this battle. However, the South had many soldiers killed during this battle. As a result, many of the Confederate soldiers became very nervous, and one of them accidentally shot and killed Stonewall Jackson thinking he was a Union general.

Battle of Gettysburg After defeating the Union in Chancellorsville Lee decided he wanted to move North, in an attempt to capture Washington D.C.. As Lee moved North he was met by Union General Meade in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. The Union defeated the South in the battle, causing large numbers of Confederate casualties. After this battle the South never invaded the North again.

Battle of Richmond This battle took place in May of 1864 At this battle, General Grant marched to the Confederate capital to win the war. As he moved forward, the North suffered many deaths. This did not stop Grant and he continued until he defeated the South. After this battle at the Appomattox Courthouse in Richmond the Confederacy surrendered.
