The Science Summary Targets I understand and can explain… how to summarize informational resources how to write a summary statement using the 3 parts (identify the source, author’s purpose, the umbrella) how to use summary transitions to synthesize my notes into the summary

# 1 The Source! Time for Kids Go to webpage

Step 1: The Summary Statement: 3 easy steps! We are going to use 3 steps to write the summary statement topic sentence: For our informational resource, we will be reading an article from Time for Kids Science and taking notes on the text using our close reading strategies!

Step 1: The Summary Statement: 3 easy steps! Identify your source (check the original source for title/author/webpage) In the article, The Price of Ivory,by Suzanne Zimbler
5
Step 2: Use a verb that explains author’s purpose In the article, The Price of Ivory by Suzanne Zimbler, the author explains the reasons

Step 3: “the umbrella statement” In as few words as possible, state the “Big Idea” of the article! Think of it as an umbrella, all of your notes have to fit under that BIG IDEA ! In the Time for Kid’s article, The Price of Ivory, by Suzanne Zimbler, the author explains the reasons why the African elephant is one of the most endangered animals in the world and how conservationists are working to protect them.

Now its time to add our important “umbrella notes” Remember that we can’t just list all of notes! We need to use transitions to help us move our summary along so the reader gets a clear understanding of the article! In the Time for Kid’s article, The Price of Ivory, by Suzanne Zimbler, the author explains the reasons why the African elephant is one of the most endangered animals in the world and how conservationists are working to protect them. The article begins by explaining…. The author then describes…. Another important idea the author examines is… The article then focuses on.. The last point made by Zimbler is ….

In the Time for Kid’s article, The Price of Ivory, by Suzanne Zimbler, the author explains the reasons why the African elephant is one of the most endangered animals in the world and how conservationists are working to protect them. The article begins by explaining that African elephants are being killed at the fastest rate in history. Some areas in Africa have lost over 60% of their elephants to poachers, illegal hunters that kill for the illegal ivory trade. The author describes the rise in elephant killing is due to various Asian countries, like China, where ivory is turned into statues and jewelry that sell for lots of money. Zimbler explains that many of the people buying these goods do not know that an elephant was killed for the ivory. In 2012, there more than 30,000 elephants killed in Africa. In the 1980’s over 1,000,000 elephants were killed. The article concludes by explaining several ways conservationists are working to help protect these incredible creatures including passing laws to stop the illegal trade, educating people about where ivory comes from, and training more rangers.
