5. COMMUTATION SAVINGS FOR EMPLOYEES & STUDENTS EMPLOYEES: Employees can save time and money by lowering tax liability with pre tax deductions from pay for commuting expenses. The IRS allows employees to set aside money for their commute -tax-free. Typically, the pre tax arrangement can result in up to 25% savings for commuting. NJ Transit Employees may order their passes for all NJ Transit rides such as buses and trains and have the cost deducted from pay on a pretax basis. The passes are delivered to the Human Resources Office the last week of every month. Transit Check Money is deducted, pre tax from pay and is placed on a debit card used to pay for commuting (up to $130/month for transit and up to $250/month for qualified parking, subway, bus, train, ferry, car, or vanpool) and save on taxes. STUDENTS: NJCU through NJ Transit has arranged for Full-time NJCU students to purchase monthly student passes on-line and save 25%. The service is free. There are no additional charges associated with subscribing to the service. Orders are automatically renewed each month and your passes arrive just prior to the new month.
