T Transforms dry/waste land to agricultural ones I Insists on inter cropping between the trees S Shares the experiences (Best Practices) T Trains the participants TIST Tree Planting India Private Limited Started on May 22, 2002 Ramesh Narasimhan: Slide 1: While this is a clever way of showing the TIST acronym, I think it might confuse them as this is not the real acronym of TIST. So please let us not use this and instead I suggest you use the first Slide from the Carbon expo presentation which says 5 years visible results. You can change that to 3 years and also add TIST India. 2,700 farmers – 271 Small Groups doing sustainable development in Reforestation: Transforming the dry landscape back to forest Conservation Farming to increase yields and manage TIST Community: Small Groups working together and sharing Best Practices TIST Program in India Ramesh Narasimhan: I Changed TITLE of this slide to “TIST Program in India”. Let this be the 3rd Slide. For the second slide, please use the Carbon Expo Slide 2. I have changed the third bullet point as seen above. Also there is no info on where the TIST program is being implemented in India. So you have to mention Tamil Nadu and also the locations in Tamil Nadu. So just have 1 bullet point about the location here. Ramesh Narasimhan: I Changed TITLE of this slide to “TIST Program in India”. Let this be the 3rd Slide. Transforming the dry landscape back to forest. Planting multiple species of trees like: Agathai, Casuarina, Cotton, Drumstick, Eucalyptus, Gravelia, Guava, Jack Fruit, Mango, Neem, Gooseberry, Tamarind, Teak The 271 Small Groups have planted more than 5,00,000 trees in the last three years. There are more than 1,00,000 seedlings in their nurseries. Reforestation
4
Conservation Farming Other than growing trees, TIST also encourages the villagers to do conservation farming. TIST helps the Small Groups to identify the best inter-cropping according to the species of trees Major inter-cropping crops are groundnuts, ladies finger, brinjal etc. Ramesh Narasimhan: Need one more picture of CF and not just intercropping Ramesh Narasimhan: Need one more picture of CF and not just intercropping
5
TIST Small Groups have 6 to 12 members that are from 2 to 6 different families Small Groups meet with their members once every week All Small Groups of a village meet under one roof (or tree) once every month Empowerment: Small Groups choose change by identifying and sharing Best Practice TIST Community: Small Groups
6
TIST trains and facilitates the Small Groups to identify and share Best Practices: To gather seeds from the local trees To start nursery with seedlings in polythene bags To preparing healthy soil- beds for the seedlings To obtain guidance from local forestry and agricultural experts TIST Small Groups Develop Best Practices
7
To know the best time for transplanting the seedlings Tree care methods specific to local conditions and species To use the available water effectively To use the available natural nutrients To remove the unwanted weeds in between the trees TIST Small Groups Share Best Practices
8
TIST Utilizes Experts and Promotes Awareness Small Groups obtain training and guidance from local forestry and agricultural experts TIST promotes environmental awareness by training school and college students through field vists to TIST sites Ramesh Narasimhan: Add a third bullet point about prabakar’s seminars to farmers and add picture of agri or forest officer training tist grouops. Villages which are under TIST program are grouped under different Group Centres. Every group centre has one Node meeting every month. Node is conducted at a common place where group members can reach by walking, bicycling or by public transport. TIST Monthly Node Meetings
10
All the members assemble under a single roof (or tree) Small Groups submit a monthly activity report to the local TIST coordinator Knowledge is shared and new Best Practices are discussed at the Nodes Group members are trained on various aspects like nursery development, tree planting, conservation farming, sharing best practices, managing finances, water usage etc. What happens at the TIST Node Meetings? Ramesh Narasimhan: Please keep looking for more pictures of Node meetings and use the Best Ones. These pics are good but see if you can get any other ones that even better. Local TIST staff uses GPS, palm computers and digital cameras to quantify tree growth Battery based system designed to work in isolated locations Near real-time grove level data with GPS coordinates and pictures sent to the TIST website via the Internet Villagers being trained as quantifiers achieves hi- technology transfer to remote rural areas Monitoring with Cutting Edge Technology
12
Small Groups get paid quarterly for live trees Small Groups required to open bank accounts to receive payments Tree payments provide incentive to keep trees alive and a long term income stream Quantification data is basis for tree payments and to calculate Carbon Sequestration Long Term GHG Income for Small Groups Ramesh Narasimhan: Add one more picture of voucher payments. I think it will be useful to have one picture of a scanned passbook payment. Also see if you can replace the above picture with a better one of a group receiving voucher. TIST Small Group activities sequester carbon in trees and improved soil Planting diverse tree species and implementing conservation farming, TIST Quantifiers verify, measure and monitor visible results CAAC creates the electronic “infrastructure” Sequestration estimates provide CO2 impact CAAC negotiates with purchasers to deliver long term income to Small Groups Greenhouse Gas Income Ramesh Narasimhan: I feel you can remove this slide.
