1
Fantasy and Science Fiction ~ These genres spring from folklore but differ in that they were not handed down by word of mouth over time but rather written by an individual author.
2
The two defined… n True Science Fiction explores scientific possibilities; asks…”If this, then what?” n Fantasy suspends scientific explanations and natural laws; contains some elements not found in the natural world
3
How they differ... n Both are set in worlds not like our present reality but science fiction settings are created based on scientific principles; in other words, they could become reality based on the knowledge we have and how our technology advances
4
This genres role in our students’ lives... n Opens the doors to the worlds of imagination n Covers important aspects of life like…the relativity of time, size and space, good versus evil, self integrity, etc.
5
Types of Fantasy n Animal Fantasy (Charlotte’s Web) n Miniature Worlds (elves, trolls…) n Time Slips, Unreal Worlds and Magic (Harry Potter) n Literary Lore (Stinky Cheese Man P; Ella Enchanted I ) n Quest Tales (The Lord of the Ring; The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe)
6
Types of Science Fiction n Mind Control (The Giver) n Life in the Future n Survival (The City of Ember, Among the Hidden)
7
Using these genres in the classroom... n Start the children out with the wonderful fantasy picture books and this will set the stage for them moving more naturally, into the longer, more complex novels. n Share the various books through read aloud, storytelling, readers theater, literature circles, etc. to expand their interests. n Some may never experience these genres if knowledgeable teachers do not expose them to them
8
Group Assignment: n Peruse the books on your table. Using the booklist at the end of your chapter, find out what category the book would fall under and be ready to share what the book is about by reading the back cover or inside jacket of the book! n Be sure to interject any possible ideas for use in the classroom!
