WAVES

MECHANICAL WAVES A disturbance in matter that carries evergy from one place to another Thy require matter to travel through…this is called a medium (solids liquids and gases) A mechanical wave created when a source of energy causes a vibration to travel through a medium Three main types of mechanical waves are transverse waves, longitudinal waves and surface waves.

MECHANICAL WAVES Two different types: Transverse Longitudinal

LONGITUDINAL WAVE A wave in which the vibration of the medium is parallel to the direction the wave travels

TRANSVERSE WAVES A wave that causes a medium to vibrate at right angles to the direction in which the wave travels Everything is at rest before its starts When vibrations start, wave is caused.

PROPERTIES OF WAVES Periodic Motion: any motion that repeats at regular time intervals Period-a complete motion that returns to its starting point Frequency-complete cycles in a given time A waves frequency equals the frequency of the vibrating source producing the wave

PROPERTIES OF WAVES Wavelength the distance between a point on one wave and the same point on the next cycle of the wave. Increasing the frequency of a wave decreases its wavelength.

PROPERTIES OF WAVES Wave speed- equal to the wavelength times the frequency V=λf Where v is the speed f is the frequency λ is the wavelength

PROPERTIES OF WAVES Amplitude A wave is the maximum displacement of the medium from its rest position The more energy a wave has, the greater is its amplitude

BEHAVIOR OF WAVES Reflection- occurs when a wave bounces off a surface that it cannot pass through Reflection does not change the speed of frequency of a wave but the wave can be flipped upseide down. Sound- SONAR Radio-RADAR Sufurce- Water

PROPERTIES OF WAVES Refraction-the neding of a wave as It enters a new medium at an angle Bending of the light in water When a wave enters a medium at an angle refraction occurs because one side of the wave moves more slowly than the other side.

PROPERTIES OF WAVES Diffraction-bending of a wave around an object or through an opening.

INTERFERENCE Occurs when two or more waves overlap and combine together Two types of interence: Constructive destrctive interference

CONSTRUCTIVE INTERFERENCE When two or more wavescombine to produce a wave with larger displacement

DESTRUCTIVE INTERFERENCE Occurs when two or more waves combine to produce a wave with a smaller displacement
