1 FRANCE SCRAPBOOK By: Chelsea Hoyle

2 QUÉBEC 1608 in 1608 Samuel de Champlain and his men which included me went to Acadia and established a French settlement that we called port royal. Unfortunately this did not last too long before it failed and we abandoned it. Soon after we decided to try again and createdca new fur trade post in Québec. This happened in 1608 and it was a great success. Next me, Samuel de Champlain and our other men decided to make an alliance with the Algonklins and the Herons against the enemy, the Iroquois. This alliance also helped us get fur from their territory and trade it. The only bad thing about us Allying with the Herons is that it drew us into conflict with the Iroquois. Champlain sent some of our men to explore beyond, further then we know of already. Samuel de Champlain told us that it was very important for us to record the Huron culture so that is what we did. In 1629 we went to war with the Iroquois and we lost because they have a much stronger army then we do. This Destroyed many of our homes and communities and much of Huronia and this was devastating. Champlain and his men, including me then rebuilt huronia. After our colony got attacked and destroyed our fur trade really suffered. This is when our government, the French took over our new company we made called company of 100 associates. This company really helped us profit more when the government took over.

7 JESUITS Soon later people were sent to Huronia to convert the Huronians to our religion, catholic. We tried to convert the people by creating missionaries this included saint marie which got burnt down in 1649.saint marie was then rebuilt for a historical sight. We did this because it is only right for us to spread our religion. The religious men that were sent to convert Huronians were called Jesuits. The only reason the Huronians let them in is because we threatened that we would only trade firs with them if they aloud the Jesuits to come to Huronia. The Jesuits carried diseases which exposed, weakened and killed many Huronians. us French people agreed that we would only allow those who converted to being catholic could have guns, but most Huronians were very stubborn and did not convert. The Iroquois then attacked us people of Huronia, they won and destroyed most of Huronia. After this attack less then 1000 Huronians remained. The Iroquois won for a few different reasons. 1 reason is that the Jesuits brought many deadly diseases to our city. Another reason is because only catholic huronians could get guns but most the Iroquois had guns that they got from the Dutch. This loss was devastating and forced us to move.

11 ROYAL GOVERNMENT In our colony, new France this is how our government is now organized. At the very top of it all is the king of France, of course and also there is our first minister. After the king and first minister comet the sovereign council. This includes three that are at equal. These are the governor, the bishop and the intending. The bovines is the one who represents the king in new France. He is responsible for all of our defence and anything that has to do with the natives. Governor general Frontenac is a very good governor with many accomplishments. He has extended the territory of our colony, new France that is by sending couriers de bois to look for furs. He also has built forts to protect us from the Iroquois and he also stopped the Iroquois from attacking us. One last thing he did is that he made friends with the native people and their military people which helped expand our fur trade. The next job is the bishop. He is the one for all the religious things. He also is responsible for missionaries, churches, schools and hospitals. An important tan influential bishop is Laval. He is always trying to convert the natives to being catholic because that is our religion. Another reason is because he was the main person organizing the parish system. He also founded a school for priests. One last thing he has done is that he has worked very hard to fight against the trade of alcohol with the natives. The last job is the intendant. He supervises what happens on a daily basis in the colony, is responsible with all to do with money and has to make sure that the others do their jobs. Talon is the most important intendant to many of us. He was the first one to count the population of our colony, new France. He also was the one to arrange for people to come to new France from France. He was a big part in forcing women to go to new France so they could grow the population by reproducing. One more thing he did is that he introduced new crops to try to help the economy of new France. The last and we all feel most important thing he did is that he made new France more profitable to France, the king was very happy about this.

15 COURIERS DE BOIS The men I talked about before that Champlain and our crew sent to explore are what I will tell you about now. These men are called couriers de bois. There mane purpose is to explore and find new places to trade furs. They were the indecent traders of the fur business. Two of the most famous couriers de bois are Pierre Radisson and Midrate de Groseilliers. They discovered some rich furs at the Hudson bay area. Us French were not interested in these furs so they then went to our enemy, the English. The English were interested in this and created the Hudson bay company, which sold furs from the men. This company was very successful and soon became our number one enemy. Another famous courier de bois is Jacques Marquette. He traveled and discovered more of the grate lakes and the north Mississippi area. He then made trading posts there. One more famous courier de bois is la Salle. He is one that discovered what we call the prairies and created trading forts there.

19 SIEGNEURY A siegneury is a large farm. They are very popular and there are very many of them here in new France. The person who owns the seigneury is called the seigneur. The seigneurs sometimes don’t even live in new France, they just own the land of the siegneury. The place thet our seigneurs live in are called manors. These are very large houses. Sometimes multiple seigneurs live in one manor because they are very large and can fit many people. The seigneurys are very large so the siegneurs split the land up into long strips and put them for rent. The people that rent the lands are called habitants. These people live at these lands, and grow crops there. They are forced to pay rent. The habitants pay rent by giving crops to government as part of it. They also have to protect the siegnurys by defending the land from the British attacking.

22 CHURCH The church has a role in many things here. One of the things church has a role in is the seigneury. The seigneurs are responsible for providing the habitants with church. Each of these churches has its own priest. The buildings are usually very small and made with bricks. The church is much of our religious and social life. Another thing it has a big role in is education. Church is our only source of education here in new France. It taught children French, latin and simple math. Many children don’t get any school especially boys. The only boys who got school were those who wanted to be priests. All of the other boys just work on farms. Soon after our nuns made and ran small schools for young French and native girls here in new France. The nuns also made and ran hospitals. The first one was in Québec in 1639 and the second one was made in 1659 in Montréal.

25 FRENCH VS. ENGLISH The French and the English are enemies for many different factors and reasons. First of all is the fur trade which originally is what made us and them enemies. We trade fur in different ways then them. The English stay in the Hudson bay area and want the natives to bring them fur when we explore new places and find new places to get fur from which makes us much more successful in fur trade. Another difference is that the English is run by a group of merchants but the government runs our fur trade. Since we both want furs from Hudson bay but the English want it to them self the Treaty of Utrecht was made. This made it so we could no longer go to Hudson bay and the English got it to them self like they wanted before. It also made it so they got Rupert land and some of Novascotia which are part of Acadia and then we got the rest of Acadia. After this we decided to make trading posts inland to try stop natives from taking our furs. Another issue between us is the fish and fishing factor. We used to both get our fish from the same area until we made and claimed Louisburg. We originally made Louisburg for a fishing station but has become much more. Now it is the center of French power, a naval base and we made a military there. Soon later the English people did not feel safe anymore now that we have Louisburg so they decided to make there own place. Theresa called Halifax and the purpose of it was to protect them from us and from the native people. The French people on the English side of Acadia after the Treaty of Utrecht did not want to sign oaths to the English because they did not want to fight against us. The English wanted them to sign the oaths because they were worried about the number of French people there were there and they did not want them to fight for us. After this the French reacted by sending these people out of Acadia and to some of the 13 colonies.

31 SEVEN YEARS WAR soon a war has started between us and the English. This war has been started because as you know us and the English are enemies for reasons that I have already told you. The thing that stared this whole war was when the English captured Louisburg. They did this by getting on high land and bombing us which forced us to surrender the land. The English did this because they needed to get control of it in order to be able to enter the St. Lawrence. They also captured 2 of our other forts, Frontenac and Duquesne. They did this by surrounding them and then attacking and destroying them. The English did this to limit the number of forts we had on the Ohio valley. Now that they have captured these forts they now can sail up the St. Lawrence. The next thing and the biggest part of the war was the battles on the plains of Abraham. There was 2 of these battles. In the first one the English bombed us from sea. They then came up a narrow path onto land and fought us. We retreated because we did not have our reinforcements and the English were bigger and stronger then us. In the second battle which happened a while later, we won. We won this battle because we were ready and waiting for this attack. The British then retreated because we were crushing them. After this we were both waiting for our reinforcements to come. The English reinforcements got to Quebec first so we knew we had no choice but to retreat to Montreal. The English then surrounded us in Montreal and forced us to surrender that land too. Now that the English were in control of all of new France there was some changes in government. Some changes that happened were that military governors were appointed to places all over new France. Another thing that happened that the Jesuits we sent here had to go back to France. Even though there were some changes many things stayed the same. This included that the French language, roman catholic religion and most things about daily life here stayed the same. Even though the war was over here in new france it was still going on in France. In 1763 when the war finally ended in france too there was a new agreement. This agreement is called the treaty of Paris. It made it so we had to give all land of new France over to the English other then 2 small islands. This meant that british now was in control of most of north America.
