1 Toilet Training for the Young Child Melanie Fitzgerald & Megan Browne Behavior Facilitators Special School District

2 When Is the Right Time?  The perfect age to toilet train the young child is when they are ready.  The right age for your child could be anywhere between the age of 2-?.  Most children are physically able between the ages of 2 ½ and 4.

3 Are We Ready?

4 Readiness Behaviors  Can the child sit and attend for short periods of time.  Does your child have activities that they like to do-singing songs, reading books…  Does the child understand the concept of completing a task and earning a reinforcer.

5 Before We Begin Data Collection Reading books Material/Supply gathering Planning with your child make a calendar

6 Visual Schedules/Routines  Make sure you have visuals set up around the house and the child and yourself are able to access quickly.  Review every time you take your child to the bathroom.  Recommend real pictures but can use clip art/boardmaker whatever is easiest and what your child will understand.

10 Let’s Get Started  Select potty time for 5 minutes prior to when your child typically urinates.  Please be there for your child and assist as needed especially in the beginning until they are independent.

11 Small Steps Small Steps  Reward frequently  In the beginning you will reward for each step your child completes either with verbal praise or a small token.  Layer the rewards if your child is able to wait and likes the build up.

21 Accidents do happen…  Remain calm and neutral at all times.  Have the child participate in changing and clean up as much as possible.  Use it as a teachable moment reread the visual story and/or go over the routine again.
