The Tevatron Decommissioning Plans AEM 10/17/11 Paul C. Czarapata

Quick Overview Phase 1 – Make it Safe! What’s in there? Keep it stable. Where are we at? Phase 2 – Clean it out! More on this much later! AEM 10/17/11 Paul C. Czarapata

Tunnel Component Totals – Tevatron only 775 Dipoles 223 Quadrupoles 208 Spool pieces with Correctors 13 Beam scrapers 26 Electrostatic separators 8 RF Cavities (some RF removed for ANU, more on this later) 36 Cryogenic Isolation Valves 5 Flourinert ® pump skids 229 Ion pumps 49 Sublimation pumps 310 Vacuum valves 350 Vacuum gauges 43 Various Beam diagnostics Variety of tunnel support (sump pumps, air handlers, phones, etc.) And all the wiring and buss work 389 remaining Main Ring magnets Does not include CDF or DØ detectors AEM 10/17/11 Paul C. Phase I - Make it Safe No different than a normal long shutdown – EXCEPT: Reclaim for reuse of all cryogens and warm entire ring. Break vacuum and let components up to atmospheric pressure with nitrogen or dry air. Normal shutdown and lock out of power sources. Normal ES&H coverage After initial few days, all work will be done as fill in while continuing to operate the neutrino program AEM 10/17/11 Paul C. Czarapata

Phase 1 - Reuse, Recycle Various people/projects have plans to reuse elements of the Tevatron NOvA, Project X, SRF/New Muon Lab (NML), Magnet Test Facility (MTF), Mu2e, Main Injector, Booster, etc. RF components, BPM electronics, cryogenic equipment, etc. These parts will be harvested when needed and without damaging other equipment. AEM 10/17/11 Paul C. Czarapata

Tunnel work for CDF We have a list of items that must be done for Phase 1 and have agreed to cover the costs for a subset of the list. For example, install two tunnel gates to prevent general public from wandering away from exhibit area. Move distribution transformer from CDF stairwell. …. etc. CDF and D0 contacts (Jonathan & George) continue to stay in contact with me regarding needed changes. Additionally D0 has spoken with AD- Cryogenics regarding the extended Cosmic running period. AEM 10/17/11 Paul C. Czarapata

Equipment control All Tevatron Equipment for Experiments has been covered by MOU’s and is on a master list previously controlled by the AD Tevatron Head with approval from Division Headquarters (now controlled by me!). The list is very dynamic and grows and shrinks over time! We know what is going to be harvested. AEM 10/17/11 Paul C. Czarapata

Other Major Facilities Still in discussion: CHL – will be shut down and secured. Discussion of possible disposition is still underway. Pelletron – originally wanted by Brookhaven National Laboratory, Now not so sure! C0 Collision Hall – discussion with laboratory management regarding radioactive storage - still in discussion. High Bay is used for Horn and Target hot work and refurbishment or compaction. Antiproton Source is reconfigured for NoVA, Mu2E, etc. and DOES NOT GO AWAY! AEM 10/17/11 Paul C. Czarapata

Put on the Brakes! An 11 th hour proposal for an accelerator technology test has put us partially on hold! There is a proposal for a Plasma Proton Accelerator test which would require the use of Sectors F, A, and B. It will be put before the Accelerator Advisory Committee in November. Impact is we can’t begin some clean up or harvesting in those sectors. AEM 10/17/11 Paul C. Czarapata

Phase 2 – Clean Out Phase 2 will take place on a longer timescale as funding permits. We know in great detail what is in the tunnel and where it is located. We have detailed estimates for time and costs to remove the existing equipment. The end state is to have the tunnel clean but NOT remove the tunnel concrete sections. Who knows when the next great idea that needs a tunnel will happen? AEM 10/17/11 Paul C. Czarapata

Summary The Laboratory has a plan that has been reviewed and accepted. The Tevatron is about a week away from room temperature. We continue to compile a list of equipment needed by other experiments. We plan to survey and prepare a small section of the tunnel to begin to allow limited tours and ultimately a section around CDF for a “visitor experience”. AEM 10/17/11 Paul C. Czarapata
