3 Elvis: The Early Years -Born on January 8th 1935
-Grew up living in poverty -Elvis grew up singing gospel music in church, which he also sang toward the end of his life. -Elvis did his first recording when he was 18 years old. It cost $3.98, and it was a gift for his mother. -Often teased in school for stuttering for being quiet, stuttering, and was often called a mama’s boy. -At 11 years old Elvis received his first guitar for his birthday. (That guitar cost $7.90)

The main styles of music that Elvis listened to were: -Gospel -Country -Blues -R & B

5 Elvis combined two styles of music in his early career that
became known as Rockabilly. It combined COUNTRY AND RHYTHM AND BLUES. As a result of this new style of music and new style of performance, many radio stations didn’t want to play this Elvis out of fear of backlash from their listeners. Rockabilly was not readily accepted since it was a blending of both “white” and “black” music.

6 Elvis: The Later Years As Elvis got older, his shows became more and more extravagant. He soon became very well known for his very flashy jumpsuits, huge sunglasses, and full backup bands.

As Elvis became older, his popularity did decrease. However, he still could maintain an amazing following. As Elvis Aged: He gained quite a lot of weight He became increasingly private His musical style mellowed out. Elvis’ Death is attributed to two things: Drug Use He had an enlarged heart

Elvis has sold over 1,000,000,000 Record Units worldwide!!! (all of those zeros add up to 1 BILLION!) “Elvis has had no less than 149 songs to appear on Billboard’s Hot 100 Pop Chart in America. Of these, 114 were in the top forty, 40 were in the top ten, and 18 went to number one. His number one singles spent a total of 80 weeks at number one. He has also had over 90 charted albums with ten of them reaching number one. These figures are only for the pop charts, and only in America. He was also a leading artist in the American country, R&B, and gospel fields, and his chart success in other countries was substantial.”

10 Hank Williams •He was born Hiram Williams, in Mount Olive, Alabama, in 1923 •He learned gospel music from his Baptist-church organist mother and blues and pop from a black street musician. •By age 16 formed the Drifting Cowboys and was playing on a local radio station.

11 •The early 1940’s he was performing one-nighters at roadhouses across
Alabama. •He moved to Nashville in 1946 and signed with Acuff-Rose publishing company and landed a recording contract with MGM the following year. His •First release was “moving on over” made famous again in the 1970’s by George Thorogood.

•In 1949 he became a regular cast member of the Grand Ole Opry and he recorded “Lovesick Blues” the first of his 11 million-selling singles. •Williams was a prolific tunesmith, powerful singer and magnetic performer. •His best-known songs “Your Cheatin’ Heart,” “Hey, Good Lookin’” “I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry”

13 Nelson, Johnny Cash and his own son, Hank Williams Jr.
•He also recorded some gospel-style material under the name Luke the Drifter. •He invented the “outlaw” idiom of country performers that paved the way for artists like Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash and his own son, Hank Williams Jr. •Problems with drugs and alcohol led to Williams’ premature death by heart attack at age 29. •In 1961, Williams was the first artist elected to the Country Music Hall of Fame
