2 Workshop Objectives Learn what AGORA offers, main features, and appropriate use Learn how to open AGORA, log in and navigate to find journals and download articles. Learn how to use CAB Abstracts and publishers’ websites to find citations and download articles.

3 AGORA is Evolving Changes to the website may occur. Technical difficulties occasionally arise. If your password doesn’t work the first time, don’t attempt to log in more than 3 times in a row. 4 How to Use AGORA

5 Step 1 Start your web browser (Internet Explorer or Netscape). Step 2 Type: http://www.aginternetwork.org in the “Address” box Step 3 Press “Enter” on the keyboard or GO Opening AGORA Homepage

7 Help Find journals MOST IMPORTANT Information about AGORA, including eligibility Login MOST IMPORTANT Information about AGORA provided in different languages: Arabic, English, French or Spanish

8 Click on login for free access to full-text articles

9 Logging In Anyone can browse journals without logging in To access full-text journal articles users’ institutions must be registered and user must log in using institutional user name and password AGORA log in does not give access to personalized services on publishers’ websites

10 Type in user name and password exactly as provided by your institution. Passwords are case-sensitive. Click Login

11 The initial AGORA page includes links to Databases and Article searches, Reference Sources and Other Free Collections Note the ‘Logged in from: Test Account’ confirmation. Also note the ‘aginternetwork.net/whalecommwww’ address – this shows that you are logged into AGORA.

12 If you do not properly login, this reminder will display on the initial page.

13 Getting Around AGORA Find and retrieve full-text for a specific article citation Find journals (AGORA) or specific articles (CAB Abstracts) on a particular topic Use Publisher, Title, Subject and CAB to search for journal and directly link to publisher’s page Browse important titles on a regular basis Find out what journals you can access Get access to other resources and bibliographic databases

15 Journal Titles Organized Alphabetically Click on ‘M’ from the ‘Journals collection’ A-Z list

16 Note - Click on the web browser’s ‘Back’ to return to Journals page or another letter in the Journals by Title list Page opens to the ‘Accessible Content’ journal titles list for the letter ‘M’

17 If login is not completed, this reminder will appear - the access to journals is limited In the ‘All Items’ display for ‘M’, the green box equals access. The white box with the ! equals no access.

18 In the ‘Accessible Content’ display, there are only 5 Open Access journals available.

19 Choose the journal you want to search – ‘Mammal Review’

20 The journal will open in a new window of the Publisher’s Journal level page in the Wiley ONLINE LIBRARY

21 Titles by Complete List Click on ‘View complete list of journals’

22 A page opens with all the journal titles listed in alphabetical order. This list does not have links to the journals

23 Titles by Subject Click on the ‘Subject’ category list– to view the list of journals in Forest & Forestry

24 List contains all journals related to the field of Forests & Forestry The ‘Accessible Content’ display for Forest & Forestry is open

25 Titles by Language Click on the link to the ‘Language’ category list – to view the drop down menu of journals by language; choose the language you prefer. e.g. French

26 An alphabetical list of French language journals of ‘Accessible Content’ titles is displayed Click on the link to Annales Scientifiques de l’Ecole Normale Superieure

28 Titles by Publisher Click on ‘Publisher’ list to view this list. Note the list of publishers ‘You have full access to:’

29 Click on and open: Nature Publishing Group

30 The ‘Accessible Content’ display retrieves a list of AGORA available journals published by Nature Publishing Group Scroll down to view the entire list and click on a title.

31 The ‘All Items’ display also retrieves the list of journals published by Nature Publishing Group In some cases, the publisher will exclude a country and this will be noted with the white box and exclamation point.

33 Retrieving Full-Text Books Click on ‘A’ in the ‘Books collection’ list – to view all the available titles EXAMPLE Find the book: Advances in Potato Chemistry and Technology, 2009 (Elsevier Books)

34 From the ‘Accessible Content’ list, open Advances in Potato Chemistry and Technology

35 You are now in the Elsevier Science Direct site and the homepage for Advances in Potato Chemistry and Technology

36 The PDF of Chapter 2, Breeding, Genetics and Cultivar Development, has been opened.

37 Also available is a ‘complete list of books’. This list does not have hyperlinks to the books.

38 Remember you can also browse by title, subject or publisher using the navigation bar.

39 Retrieving Full-Text Articles 1. Find the journal. Since we know the title, we can use the ‘Journals collection’ ‘C’ list to find it EXAMPLE Find the citation: Craig Roy and Philippe Sansonetti. (2004) “Host–microbe interactions: bacteria: Host–pathogen interactions: interpreting the dialogue.” Current Opinion in Microbiology, 7(1): 1-3

46 Article opens up in PDF 6. Click here to save or print Note: you must have Acrobat Adobe Reader On your machine

47 Summary AGORA permits you to browse journals, publishers, find a known citation, download articles. You can also find journals and articles using CAB Abstracts- (see CAB Abstracts Module) For navigation and use of Publisher websites- (see Publisher Websites Module) Once you find the correct journal, volume and issue, find the pdf and save it or print it for use a Exercise: Find the following citation and retrieve the full-text article –H.
