Exam question about making The examiner is looking to see how much you know about making. It is your task to write in as much detail as possible to show how much you know. The example question will ask you how to make this trophy.

Believe it or not! You already know how to do this. If you could talk your way through the exam you would all get As Unfortunately you have to write it down. Shame that. All is not lost the following will help you know what to write and how to write it. All you need to do is engage in the lesson to prove that you care enough about YOUR GCSEs.

Part 1 Marking out or Using CAM You are all going to choose CAM because you have experienced it and it is the easier option.

How to tackle the question! Draw the shape of the object given. It will probably need to be drawn flat. (a net) This means that you will use dotted lines to show where the bends are. Include tools and equipment used (clues for this are in the question). Use of different coloured lines to show cutting and engraving. Don’t forget to include how 10 can be made.

Part 2: How to make it This question test your knowledge of how to get the drawing from the computer to the laser cutter, including: Clamping work piece Power setting/Speed and feed settings Safety

Part 3: Bending, shaping, joining This question tests your knowledge of bending, shaping and/or joining, include: Sufficient detail for most of the design to be bent/joined, in quantity with use of jigs/formers. Tools and equipment given.

Part 4: Applying a surface finish Explain that a laser cut part would not need finishing as the laser produces a good quality finish Reference to improving the quality of laser cut edges by use of wet and dry paper, ‘Brasso’ and polishing/buffing

Part 5: Producing the text Explain that the logo would be etched in by the laser. The candidate may simply reference back to Stages 1 and 2. OR Detail that the text could be made using the sticker cutter and applied using application tape
