2. Biography Born: June 30, 1944 Age: 71 From: New York, NY Education: BA in Art from Dartmouth College (1965) Awards: Prix de Rome. The Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship. The National Endowment for the Arts Photographers Fellowship.

About Sternfeld began making color photographs in the 1970’s after learning the color theory of Johannes (Johannes Itten was one of the first people to define and identify strategies for successful color combinations.). He started off using small/ medium- format cameras. But by the time he started one of his projects (“American Prospects”) in 1987, he was using an 10x8in format camera (accordion looking thing). Those cameras let him attain sharp details, that was what his photography was known for. After he finished “American Prospects” Sternfeld continued to apply Johannes color theory in his other project. Those being “On This Site: Landscape in Memoriam” (1997), “Stranger Passing” (2001), and “Walking the High Line”(2002), “Sweet Earth: Experimental Utopias in America” (2006).

4. Style of Photography Sternfeld’s style is Street photography. He put allot of attention to visual qualities as well as insightful and generally raw view of his subjects.
