Boston/Salem Trip 2015 American Literary & Historical Exploration

Who? This trip is meant for American Literature and American History students in the Junior class The chaperones will be teachers from the English and History departments – Mrs. Krisak – Miss Miller – Mr. Curcio

What? This is a weekend long, academic trip to the Boston area to visit and learn about various locations that are important to American literature and history. – Famous battle sites – Historic buildings/museums – Famous literary sites

Where? Day 1 – Salem – Salem Witch Museum – Hawthorne’s “House of Seven Gables” – Ghost Tour of Salem

Where? Day 2 – Boston – Historic Tour of Boston – Freedom Trail, State House, Boston Common, the Old South Meeting House, Faneuil Hall, site of Old North Church, and the USS Constitution (Old Ironsides) – Quincy Market – New England Aquarium – Prudential Skywalk Observatory

Where? Day 3 – Boston Area – Lexington and Concord – Walden Pond – Harvard Square and Cambridge

When? We will depart from St. Joseph High School on Friday May 8, 2015 (approximately 5AM) and return on Sunday May 10, 2015 (approximately 9PM)

Why? The goal of this trip is to integrate a visual and kinesthetic aspect to the learning that we are doing in the American Literature and History classes. – For example: Students read “The Crucible” and learn about the Revolutionary War. On this trip we will be visiting The Salem Witch Museum and the battlefields of Lexington and Concord This is an opportunity to allow students to interact with what they are learning in the classroom.

How? The trip is being managed by Edustars Tour Company, representative Jon Gamza. They are booking all transportation, accommodations, admission, and providing a tour guide and overnight security guard. The trip is being sponsored by the English Department in cooperation with the History Department. The bus company is Starr via Trenton The hotel is The Fairfield Inn, a subsidiary of Marriot

Requirements This trip is going to be offered on a “first come, first serve” basis. We are capping the total number of students to 30 (pending room accommodations). Students attending must be in good academic standing (i.e.: they may not be failing or in danger of failing any courses). Students must not have any disciplinary issues.

Inclusions Transportation: – To and from St. Joseph HS to Boston/Salem area – All local transportation while in Boston/Salem area Room Accommodations: – 2 nights in the Fairfield Inn (Revere) – Rooms of 4 (two queen beds) – Overnight security Meal Accommodations: – 2 breakfasts (at the hotel) – 2 dinners (prepaid - at local restaurants) Activities: – Admission to all sightseeing activities, museums, and tours Taxes/Gratuities 10:1 Student to Teacher-Chaperone Ratio

Cost $509.00 per student based on quad occupancy and 30+ paying participants. 1 st deposit - $100 due 11/21/14 2 nd deposit - $100 due 01/30/15 Final deposit - $309 (balance) due 03/27/15 If you require a single, double, or triple room the rate increases ($160 per person for single; $80 per person for double; $50 per person for triple)

Fundraising We encourage students to participate in various fundraising events during the next few months to help defray the cost of this trip. Our first fundraiser will take place in early November; we will be selling Yankee Candles products. – Yankee Candle offers the opportunity to earn up to 40% profit on all sales. – Students will create their own seller accounts under our organization, and can earn money towards their own trip. Other fundraising opportunities may include bake sales, semi-formal flowers, T-shirt sales (for St. Joe Casual Days), etc.

How to Start Students – Look over the information packet – Talk to your parents – Return the registration form by Nov. 10 and first deposit by Nov. 21 Parents – Attend interest meeting – Sign up for trip insurance (optional)
