DUST BOWL PHOTOGRAPHY POEM 7 th Literature and Composition

Instructions: Step 1  Each of you will receive 10 sticky notes.  As you walk around the room and view the photographs, you will write words on the sticky notes that come to mind when viewing the photo.  Write down the first word that comes to mind when viewing the photo.  You shouldn’t read the captions; instead think about what the photograph portrays and record your first, instant reaction.

Rules  Rules for participating:  You may only write one word for each photo.  You may not write more than one word on the same sticky note.  You may not use any words from the captions.  You are NOT ALLOWED TO TALK! This is a silent activity.  Suggestions:  Try to use varied parts of speech.  Words can be simple and still convey powerful meaning, but also try to think of words that are interesting and descriptive.

Instructions: Step 2  Look at the photo in front of you. Think about what the photo means, and what thoughts come to mind when studying the photo.  Read the words that were placed on the photo.  Think about how your interpretation might be different from the words that appear.  Identify words that match your interpretation of the meaning of the photo.

Instructions: Step 3  You will write a poem using the words that are placed on the photo.  You must use EVERY “sticky note” word at least once.  Rearrange the words any way you like, and add in the necessary words and phrases to create a poem that accomplishes the following goals:  Imitate the author’s use of free verse, and short, concise lines.  Use descriptive language, vivid verbs, and figurative language to express strong emotions.  Demonstrate an understanding of the time period by including details about the Dust Bowl and the Great Depression.

Instructions: Step 4  Choose from one of the arts extension activities below:  Visual Arts: Create a drawing, painting, or other artistic representation of your poem.  Theater: Perform a dramatic reading of your poem to the class, or sing your poem to the class.  Music: Set your poem to music by writing a song that represents your poem. (You can use the class piano!)  Production and Design: Design a three dimensional object in which you can creatively display your poem.  Dance: Choreograph an interpretive dance that shows the emotions your poem expresses.  Film and TV: Create a video that expresses your poem.
