Jimi Hendrix one of the icons and legends of the 60s, due to amazing guitar playing, rooted in the blues, his songwriting, innovative use of technology (the use feedback or the wah wah pedal), and his over- the-top stage antics (also rooted in earlier wild performers like Little Richard).

White Rabbit Written by vocalist Grace Slick when she was with the band Great Society. The music is inspired by Spanish music, especially Ravel's bolero Lyric refers to Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland An ode to fantasy, but also to the use of psychedelic “mind-expanding” drugs like LSD, peyote, mescaline and magic mushrooms

The Grateful Dead

Ron McKernan aka Pigpen

The Grateful Dead one of the most famous San Francisco bands live performances could last for three or four hours without a break, one song or instrumental leading into another. Combined down-to-earth blues, soul and rock 'n' roll, with long spaced-out improvisations, which can be heard on their album Live/Dead

Aftershocks The Dead would continue to tour from the 70s to the 90s, with some personnel changes, and the were followed by thousands of young Deadheads. Brilliant innovators in sound technology Hippie entrepreneurship: gave music away for free, anticipating later business models Grateful Dead studies existing in academia!

Feel Like I’m a-Fixin’ to Die Rag Country Joe & the Fish, influential psychedelic band based in San Francisco This satirical song became famous thanks to Woodstock festival (and film) Recycles an old New Orleans jazz standard, ‘Muskrat Ramble’

Merle Haggard

Okie from Muskogee The Backlash! Protest about protest. A ‘reactionary’ protest song. Country singer Merle Haggard probably wrote this song tongue in cheek, but expressed the views of the so-called Silent Majority, who didn’t like the hippies and student protesters!
