Human Rights 4 me After the second world war, a lot of governments got together and set up an organisation called the United Nations. Because of what happened in the war, where many people were killed, the United Nations put a charter together they called it: United Nation Declaration of Human Rights. This Declaration became law in this country in 2000 and became the Human Rights Act.

Human Rights 4 me This Act said that we are all equal citizens; this means that all people, including people with learning disabilities have the same human rights. It says that organisations that are ‘public authorities’ like the health services, social works, schools, colleges, police service and others have to protect and support everyone’s human rights. It is not always easy to know what a ‘public authority’ is, so it is good to ask.

Human Rights 4 me European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) is an agreement passed by the Council of Europe. This group of countries have come together after the Second World War to stop such terrible acts happening again. It has its own court of Human Rights in Strasbourg. You can go to this court to claim your rights under the Convention and you can also use the courts in this country, too.
