The goal of health care in Great Britain is to provide medical care to all residents, regardless of income.

Residents have the OPTION of choosing 2 sectors… The National Health Service (NHS) – public service that provides medical care paid for manly by the government. Private Medical Care

The National Health Service Created: July 5, 1948 Result of the National Health Service Act (1946).

The PRINCIPLE of NHS Provide comprehensive (complete) health care service, regardless of a person’s income.

PRIMARY SERVICES Doctors, Dentists, Opticians, Pharmacists, Health Visitors, District Nurses, Midwives

ALL RESIDENTS are covered. Hospital Treatment is free. Patients pay for prescriptions/dental treatment - except people with low incomes, children, expectant mothers, pensioners and other groups.

The NHS is SEPARATED into HEALTH AUTHORITIES – 100 local organizations responsible for health services in a specific area. – Has contracts with public and private hospitals in the area

Staff include GENERAL PRACTICIONER (GP) – a family doctor. The first doctor a patient will see. Specialist Doctor Nurse Health Visitor

A hospital can become a TRUST: 1. Independent of health authority control 2. Still treats NHS patients 3. Paid for by contracts with health authority TRUSTS WERE CREATED BY REFORMS TO THE NHS

CHANGES TO THE NHS Starting in the 1960’s and continuing in the 1990’s THE NATIONAL HEALTH SERVICE AND COMMUNICTY CARE ACT OF 1990 – expanded the range of NHS services. Led to the creation of THE INTERNAL MARKET system

THE INTERNAL MARKET CREATED in 1991 The PURPOSE of the Internal Market is to – promote competition within the NHS – Allow doctors/hospitals more independence Doctors/Hospitals who take part in the system are known as Fundholders

FUNDHOLDING Doctors and hospitals have control of how they spend their money. More choice on what medicines and treatments they buy.

THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT WANTS A PARTNERSHIP WITH THE NHS AND THE PRIVATE MARKET The Private Market –Patients can choose private doctors. Over 6 Million people covered by Private Medical Insurance

PRIVATE INSURANCE PAID FOR BY…. PRIVATE PATIENTS– pay for their medical service WHY? Receive better care and reduce the waiting time for treatment.
