Background Youth forms the majority in Swaziland Most people depend on agriculture Youth are a stakeholder in CAADP CAADP can play a vital role in youth development

Investment Options Pillar 1 : Land and water management Water and Irrigation Development Programme. Integrated Land Management Programme for Combating Land Degradation Pillar 2: Market Access. Development of sustainable markets programme

Investment Options cont. Pillar 3: Food Security and Nutrition Establishment and rehabilitation of small livestock seed stock centres. Enhancing Dairy Productivity through capacity building, revitalization of the dairy cattle breeding programme and establishment of an Artificial Insemination (AI) centre Revitalizing small-scale crop production Promotion of sustainable feed and fodder production and utilization. Improving beef cattle productivity and establishing smallholder cow-calf operations and feedlot

Development of extension policy, implementation framework and capacity building of Farmers and Extension Staff Improving agriculture information and data management systems Strengthening the early warning system and food emergency response mechanism Rehabilitation of Ministry’s Rural Development Centres

So what in CAADP for Youth? CAADP must be youth-oriented or accommodative Sustainability of CAADP depend on Youth involvement Long-term benefit for business involved in CAADP Business to plan appropriately CAADP Pillars do support youth involvement E.g. Training institutions must train students with CAADP appropriate technologies/skills.

Challenges No participation of Youth More older people in agriculture No specific youth programme in CAADP No economic gap analysis Low stakeholder participation Delays in securing assistance for gap analysis

Next steps 1. Update stock taking report 2. Conduct economic gap analysis 3. Develop investment plans 4. Peer review 5. Business meeting 6. Include Youth in CAADP Team
