It mechanically and chemically breakdowns food into smaller molecules which can be absorbed into the blood stream Excretes waste materials your body can’t use

Mechanical: Begins in the mouth with the teeth and tongue chewing food into pieces you can swallow Chemical: Salivary glands produce enzymes (amylase), which breaks down complex carbohydrates to simple ones

Small intestine: occurs in the last five meters of called the jejunum and ileum villi increase the rate of absorption of nutrients Large intestine: Accepts what the small intestine doesn’t absorb Absorbs more water and concentrates the wastes
