What is iodine? Iodine is a chemical element with a symbol I and atomic number 53. Iodine is required by higher animals for synthesizing thyroid hormones, which contain the element.

What is a low-iodine diet? Thyroid cancer patients with papillary or follicular thyroid cancer will usually receive a dose of radioactive iodine about two months after their surgery in an attempt to destroy any remaining thyroid cells in their bodies

How much iodine should be consumed on a low iodine diet The goal is under 50 mcg (micrograms) of iodine per day

A low-iodine diet will last for a short period of time Usually about 2 weeks 2 weeks before a radioactive iodine scan or treatment

SIDE EFFECTS OF A LOW IODINE DIET Effects of the treatment on the body Weight loss- ◦ Cutting out dairy, seafood, processed foods, baked goods cuts out a lot of calorie intake which results in weight loss Calcium deficiency- ◦ Due to cutting out dairy in your diet you will often be put on a calcium supplement while you are on a low-iodine diet
