Precious & Semi-Precious Metals Lesson objective – to be able to identify common metals and understand the different properties and uses of metal based materials within engineering and domestic products

Fact- file Product Design Gold (metal – au is a native metal in the ground) Platinum (metal Platinum is a white metal, but unlike gold it is used in jewellery in almost its pure form (approximately 95% pure). Sliver (metal – can be found naturally, silver is sometimes found occurring as a free metal, and it may also appear in deposits with other metals like copper and gold. ) Copper (metal- Copper is a reddish brown nonferrous mineral which has been used for thousands of years by many cultures. ) Bronze (Bronze is a metal alloy consisting primarily of copper, usually with tin as the main additive)metal alloy coppertin Tasks - write down as many products that could be made from these metals

Gold Bullion Tasks discussion - What are the characterises of this metal? Now design a really lovely ring for yourself How could you make this?

Gold Bullion Tasks discussion - What are the characterises of this metal? Now design a really lovely ring for yourself How could you make this? Rare Non-ferrous – what does this mean? Expensive Gold is the most malleable and ductile metal; a single gram can be beaten into a sheet of one square meter, or an ounce into 300 square feet. Gold readily forms alloys with many other metals. These alloys can be produced to increase the hardness or to create exotic colors (see below).malleable ductilegramsquare meterouncesquare feet

Platinum American Eagles Platinum is considered as one of the most precious metals. Platinum is one of the densest and heaviest metals, highly malleable, soft and ductile. It is extremely resistant to oxidation and to corrosion of high temperatures or chemical elements as well as a very good conductor of electricity and a powerful catalyzing agent. This precious metal has silvery-white colour and does not tarnish.

Silver It is rare, strong, corrosion resistant, and unaffected by moisture, vegetable acids, or alkalis. Silver is also resonant, mouldable, malleable, and possesses the highest thermal and electric conductivity of any substance. Read more:

Bronze

Copper

Pewter

Task – designing a decal logo for the school out of pewter x 20 - annotate all your drawings Step 1 – the designing on Tec soft Step 2 – the making the mould on the Denford Maxi Router

If you wanted to make several you would router out several moulds

Steps as sketches

AfL – your marks will be vuilt up as follows Design idea – drawn well – 5 Rendering 2 Drawing the stages of the CAD – 2 Drawing the equipment and annotation – 8 Design quality and correct use of the tools and equipment – 3
