Forces that occur between molecules. Intramolecular forces are the forces that bond atoms together to form compounds and diatomic molecules. They are much stronger forces than Intermolecular Forces (IMF) 10.1 Copyright © Houghton Mifflin Company. All rights reserved. Chapter 10 | Slide 2

Dipole = areas of partial charge within a molecule due to the difference in electronegativity of the bonded atoms. Molecules with dipole moments can attract each other electrostatically The positive area of one attracts the negative area of the other. Physically arranged so + and – are aligned. Only about 1% as strong as covalent or ionic bonds. 10.1 Copyright © Houghton Mifflin Company. All rights reserved. Chapter 10 | Slide 3

Instantaneous dipole that occurs accidentally in a given atom induces a similar dipole in a neighboring atom. Significant in large atoms/molecules. Occurs in all molecules, including nonpolar ones. 10.1 Copyright © Houghton Mifflin Company. All rights reserved. Chapter 10 | Slide 4
