STATIC ELECTRICITY BY GLENN AQUILINA, MATTHEW CAMILLERI & CAIN ABLE BUTTIGIEG Class 4.5
2
Atom Everything is made up of atoms. Atoms are made up of protons, neutrons and electrons. An object becomes charged when its atoms have more protons than electrons or more electrons than protons. ATOM In the middle there are: PROTONS (+) AND NUETRONS In the outer part there are: ELECTRONS (-) (free to move)
3
Charges. Protons are positively charged (+) Electrons are negatively charged (-) Neutrons have no charge. The charge of one proton is equal in strength to the charge of one electron.
4
How Static Electricity Works When protons and electrons meet a small shock is felt. The same thing happens when you touch the T.V. screen.
5
Charging polythene by rubbing A charged polythene gets negatively charged when rubbed.
6
Charging perspex by rubbing A charged perspex gets positively charged when rubbed.
7
Attraction and repulsion
8
Induction Charged object attracted by a neutral object Electrons in the wall will repel and so becomes positively charged so the balloon is attracted
9
Charging by induction
10
Earthing This method is used to make the spheres neutral. Sphere A will gain electrons Sphere B will lose electrons
