Exercise In pairs, add two to three indicators to the list of rich, middle and poor.

Internal or external tools to estimate member poverty level Simple, non-financial indicators statistically derived from national household surveys; defined by country; may need to be updated International Poverty lines (1 or 2 USD/day) PA Tools ▫PPI (Progress out of Poverty Indicator, Grameen Foundation): focus on practicality; less indicators, easier intake. ▫PAT (Poverty Assessment Tool, IRIS-USAID): focus on accuracy, US gvt definition of poverty; more indicators. How are the questionnaires built? PPI Enquête Nationale From a national surveys on households, statistical analysis to derive the indicators highly correlated with the poverty status 150 indicators Selection linked to the relevance for the users (simple and practical to collect), variability with poverty status, stat. reliability, complementarity, verifiability 10 indicators Each indicator goes with a weight based on the answers of the original national household survey (total out of 100)

Poverty Likelihood Score indicates the likelihood to be under different poverty lines

Analysis and quality contol Likelihood average of the covered population corresponds to the poverty levels of the population average It works from a sample randomly selected Reliability of the results depends on the quality control: ▫Training of the personnel in charge of the survey ▫Verification of sample plan and filling of the questionnaire ▫Data entry and interpretation

Roll Out Develop a Proposal for Piloting and Rolling out this Tool Steps: 1.Appoint staff member to manage this process 2.Agree final tool content and format for compilation 3.Agree how this information will be presented and used 4.Pilot in 3 credit union and obtain feedback 5.Finalise tool in collaboration with CuTRAC 6.Roll out tool to agreed sample of CUs 7.Follow up for results and assess utilisation
