Chapter 23 West Coast Fishing
2
Types of Catch Pacific Salmon is the most important catch for the West Coast fishing industry.
3
Life Cycle of the Pacific Salmon 1) Hatch in freshwater streams and swim to the Pacific ocean.
4
Life Cycle of the Pacific Salmon 2) Salmon live in Pacific until they mature, then they swim back inland to where they were originally hatched - This is Where most are caught
5
Life Cycle of the Pacific Salmon 3) Once they return inland the salmon lay eggs in gravel beds where they are also fertilized. 4) After the male/female salmon spawn their life cycle is complete.
7
Collapse of the West Coast Fishery 1) Over fishing 800 000 tonnes of fish caught /year Not enough mature salmon left Less than 10 processing plants left in B.C. (Formally 100)
8
Collapse of the West Coast Fishery 2) Changes in the Environment Increase in the temperature of the water have caused salmon to leave. Salmon may eventually spawn in the rivers of Alaska rather than B.C.
9
Collapse of the West Coast Fishery 3) Lack of Salmon Fishing Treaty Dispute between U.S and CAN about how much salmon can be caught. CAN officials say fewer salmon should be caught. U.S. officials feel no restrictions are needed.
10
Collapse of the West Coast Fishery 4) First Nations The demand for salmon by aboriginal people is growing This is due to the First Nations’ rights to fish and the focus of aboriginal land claims in BC.
11
Collapse of the West Coast Fishery 5) Sport Fishing Makes 7 billion dollars a year for the CAN economy. A salmon caught by a recreational fisherman has a much larger economic yield.
12
Collapse of the West Coast Fishery 6) Aquaculture/Fish Farms Fish farms raise salmon in pens. Sell salmon at a lower price than wild salmon. Worth $175 million annually compared to commercial fishing ($96 million).
