1 Automation and Drives PC- based Control All about SIMATIC WinAC

2 Innovation in PC technology
Automation technology will participate in the rapid innovation in PC technology! Why PC-based Automation? PC performance is increasing extremely rapidly! With the standard controllers, we have a doubling in performance approximately every 5 years, and for the PCs approximately every 1-2 years. Intel stated that there will be a 22 GHz processor by 2008, i.e. 2.2 GHz in 2001! Ten times the performance in 7 years, with standard controllers a maximum of three times in the same period. It can therefore be envisaged that the PC with its permanently increasing performance can be used in more and more applications with increasing complexity. This will be possible with constant/falling costs at the same time. Statement from Intel: „22 Ghz in 2008“

3 Integration of automation solution on a hardware platform
Cost reduction through integration of Why PC-based Automation? Visualization Control Data processing Networks PCs are already present in most machines and plants today anyway. Since PC performance is becoming increasingly better, it is always cheaper to execute all automation applications on one hardware platform (PC). Hyper-threading is on everyone's lips at the moment. With this technology, the processor can then really execute several processes in parallel (e.g. open-loop controls and visualization), where one application does not influence the timing of the other one. Extract from Intel.com: The principle is extremely simple: with hyper-threading, the operating system (e.g. Windows XP) and the programs make better use of the CPU resources than possible with conventional technology, quasi generating a further "virtual processor". This is as if the computer were equipped with several CPUs. The advantage: each of these CPUs can execute tasks independent of the others. The result: there are no more pauses when switching over between programs or when working in one program while a second one is being executed in the background. With the same clock frequency, such a processor operates up to 25% more effectively than previous models. on one single PC

4 Openness of PC technology
Increased flexibility through use of Why PC-based Automation? Office Control application An OPC server and activeX elements are supplied along with WinAC. For even faster OPC communication, it is also possible to use the SIMATIC NET OPC server. The SIMATIC NET OPC server is supplied as standard with WinAC from version 4.1 onwards. Using the ODK it is possible to link C++ applications into the control program. It is additionally possible to write any type of drivers for PC cards or software. Those without C++ know-how can also obtain support from our PC-based Automation Competence Centers. WinAC executes on standard Windows operating systems. 5 Totally Integrated Automation
Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES) Totally Integrated Automation Control Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) MES Solutions Inbound Logistics Process Discrete Outbound Logistics Production Workflow Design and Engineering Installation and Commissioning Operation Maintenance Modernization and Upgrade Production Life Cycle PC-based Control with SIMATIC Our offer for increasing productivity is called Totally Integrated Automation, represented using the three dimensions already mentioned: Production Life Cycle, Production Workflow and Vertical Integration Within Production Workflow, particular attention is paid to the production sequences within the company Commencing with the incoming goods (Inbound Logistics), where the preparation and supply for the subsequent process sequences takes place, e.g. hops, malt, bottles, labels and crown caps in the case of beer production. This is followed by the process sequence of the production. In the case of beer production, this would be the brewing process, consisting of the brewing room, fermentation and storage cellar, and filtration. In turn, this is followed by the classical production sequence (discrete). In the case of beer production, this would be the filling and packaging. Finally comes the outgoing goods department (Outbound Logistics) with warehouse and shipping Totally Integrated Automation offers you a uniform range of products and systems including sensors and actuators, networks such as Profibus and PROFInet, the Simatic S7 controllers, Simatic PCS7 process control systems, Simotion motion control and Sinumerik CNC. Covering all of this, Simatic IT in the MES level combines the four production sections.

26 3rd party add-ons Other vendors use WinAC's openness to achieve integration into the SIMATIC automation concept! Incorporation of other fieldbuses Integration of various data formats Linking of automation technology and instrumentation WinAC's openness is of course also used by other vendors of automation technology. Messrs. Hilscher offer drivers for WinAC and their fieldbus cards on their Internet site. With a Hilscher card, WinAC can therefore also be used with Can-Bus, Device-Net, etc. or with the Phönix driver Interbus-S, for customers where the bus system is absolutely essential, and is a good argument for us to use WinAC to gain access and to offer a SIMATIC controller. Hilscher developed the drivers with the ODK itself, without cooperation with Siemens. The Industrial DataBridge of the I&S colleagues permits interconnection of various data formats. Cooperation and drivers exist with National Instruments in order to link NI signal cards of the E range directly into WinAC. This is carried out using the Data Socket interface from LabView and of course again with the ODK of WinAC. In the future, one will also progress together on the ProfiNet path, i.e. NI and Siemens components can then be networked using ProfiNet.
