We will start with the basics. We don’t want to overwhelm you! Before we begin lets looks at four famous geographers in history and what important skills they learned to help them in their travels. (Clicking on the world helps you move from slide to slide. )

2 Amerigo Vespuci What is a cartographer?
The America’s were named after this man. He had many skills but is most famous for being an expert cartographer. What is a cartographer? Click on the map to find out.

3 Meriwether Lewis and William Clark
Lewis and Clark are most famous for exploring an area of land that spanned from the Mississippi River all the way west to the Pacific Ocean. They had many skills that helped them in their explorations. Here are listed a few: -Ability to read and understand maps -Just like Amerigo Vespuci they created their own maps. -Lewis and Clark could communicate and learn from the Native Americans that they came in contact with. -Any new plants, animals, or minerals they came across would be recorded and samples were collected. These are just a few of the skills that these men had to be outstanding geographers. Click on picture for more info.

4 David Livingstone Click on picture for a short video.

5 Let’s get down to business!
We have learned about four men who were very famous geographers. To summarize we will list the different skills that they had to help them become experts in the geography world. Make a list on your own and then compare it with a fellow student in the class. Click on ‘The List “ to see how well you did. THE LIST Before any of the geographers learned these skills they first had to understand The Five Themes of Geography. Click on the world in the corner to begin your training to become an expert geographer!!

6 The Five Themes of Geography
(Click on the title for a quick introductory video) Movement Region Location Interaction Place Hint: an easy way to remember the five themes of geography is by using the acronym: MR.LIP Click on each word in order to learn more about it!

7 Movement Places in the world do not exist in isolation. Because places have different characteristics, it follows that people, goods, and ideas will move between them. Click here for example.

8 Region A region is a group of places with at least one common characteristic. Click here for example.

9 Location Geographers studying a place usually begin by finding its location. Click here for example.

10 Interaction This theme involves how people use their environment. How have they changed it? what are the consequences of those changes? How have people responded to changes in their environment? Click here for example.

11 Place Every place on the earth has features that distinguish it from other places. One challenge of geography is to understand how the character of a place is similar to and distinct from the characteristics of other places. Click here for example.

12 Example of Movement In the United States there are many different kinds of people from all over the world. When they come here they bring their traditions, food, clothing and language. Mexicans from Mexico bring their salsa, burritos, and tacos. People from the continent of Asia bring their rice, noodles, and egg rolls. The Italians bring their pastas and pizza. Not only to people bring material things with them but they also bring their ideas such as religion or education. These are all types of movement. Click on the world to learn more…

13 Humans move a lot! When we think of movement we think of people going from place to place. There are other types of movement. Can you think of other types? Click on the word movement above to learn more. Political views religion Clothing styles internet Discuss with a friend other types of movement. Click on the world to move on.

14 Let’s test your movement knowledge….
Decide whether the following statements are true of false. Click on the number to see the correct answer. Albert Einstein moved to the United States from Germany. He was a very intelligent man. He helped create the Atom Bomb that was used in WWII. This example could be considered to be a type of movement. TRUE Missionaries from Europe wanted to spread the blessings of the Catholic Church throughout all the world. Many young priests and nuns traveled to Mexico and United States to set up missions and teach the people about their church. This is another type of movement. TRUE During WWII Adolf Hitler convinced many that the Jews were a people that should be destroyed. Thousands even millions believed Hitler’s words. This example is also considered movement. TRUE Click on the world when done

15 Example of Region There are many types of regions in the world. As the definition says it’s a place that has similar characteristics. So a place with lots of mountains is known as a mountain region. If there are many trees than it’s known as a forest region. There are political regions and religious regions as well. There are all different kinds of regions. Click on the world to learn more…

16 Click here to watch a video on Hawaii.
You might live in a place that is considered to be in all different kinds of regions. For example let’s say you live on one of the islands of Hawaii. What different types of regions do you live in? Forgot what a region is? Click here to remember A region is an area on the earth that has similar characteristics. Ok now that you remember what a region is let’s get back to the islands of Hawaii. Think carefully what different regions are the islands of Hawaii apart of? Click on the map to find out. Island region Tropical region Polynesian region Volcanic region Christian region Surfing region Click here to watch a video on Hawaii. Click on the world when you are finished.

17 We live in the great state of Utah! What regions do we live in?
Think carefully… -Mountain region -Desert region -Native American region -River region -Christian region -Earthquake region -Tourist region Click on the map of Utah to see if you’re on the right track. Click here to move on.

18 Example of Location In geography there are two types of location:
Absolute: this is when you give an exact address or the longitude and latitude coordinates Relative: this type of location is just giving directions using a location in relation to what it is near to. So instead of giving my address to my school I would say that my school is near the McDonalds in West Valley. This would be giving my relative location. Time to learn about more about location! Click on the world.

19 Example of Interaction
The geography theme of interaction is dealing with human-environment interaction. Humans interact with the environment in a number of ways. When water dams are built or highways are constructed these are all ways that humans interact with the world around them. Click on the world to learn more…

20 The negative and positive of Human-environment interaction….
Humans interact with their surroundings everyday. These interactions can be good or bad. Can you think of positive and negative interactions? Positive Interactions Negative Interactions Click on either positive or negative.

21 Positive Human-environment interactions
Recycling our trash Using solar panels to generate energy Planting trees

22 Negative Human-environment Interactions
Littering Pollutions Let’s help the world! Click the above link for a fun video. How can we help the world be a better place? Destroying our forests Click the world to find out

23 How do we help the earth? By working together we can find ways to keep the world safe, clean, and beautiful for many more years. Click on the word “together” above to learn a few tips about helping.

24 Example of Place Understanding a character of a place is what this geography theme means. In talking about the place Utah a good geographer would know Utah’s climate, weather patterns, landforms, and if there is potential for natural disasters. Click on the world to learn more….

25 The world is full of amazing places!

39 Learning about longitude and latitude
By the time you are finished with this power point you should know the difference between longitude and latitude and be able to locate different landmarks using longitude and latitude.

40 What is longitude and latitude?
Longitude and Latitude are invisible lines on the Earth’s surface to help navigate and map out different locations. These lines help people find places in the world. Click on the earth to see what longitude and latitude lines look like.

41 Let’s take a closer look….
Click on the arrows to learn more! These top lines that go from North to south are called longitude lines. (Click here for more) These side lines that go from east to west are called latitude lines. (Click here for more)

42 Let’s look even closer….
Notice that each line is measured in degrees. If you look at the line on top that is 100 degrees and follow it down to the line that is 40 degrees across what state are you in? UTAH

43 Longitudinal lines of the Earth
The main longitude line is located at 0 degrees. It is called the Prime Meridian.

44 Latitudinal Lines of the Earth
The main latitude line is located at zero degrees and it is called the Equator.

45 Let’s try again… Mexico
If you were to follow the longitude line of 110 degrees to the latitude line of 30 degrees where would you be? Click here to find out Mexico

46 One more time… let’s go world wide!
Where would you find yourself if you followed the longitude line of 30 degrees to the latitude line of 0 degrees? Click here to find out AFRICA!

47 Longitude degree of 100 and a latitude degree of 30.
How about this one… If wanted you to give me the latitude and longitude coordinates for Texas. What would those be? Think carefully….. Click for answer! Longitude degree of 100 and a latitude degree of 30. Did you get it?

48 Try this one! What countries lie on the latitude degree line of 75?
What countries lie on the longitude degree line of 150? Write your answers down and be prepared to share with class.

49 It’s your final test! Starting with question number and click on the right places of the map. (the circles are where you should click) This is the Equator!! 1. Which line is the Prime Meridian? 2. Which line is the Equator? This is the Prime Meridian!!
