Progressives going after Big Business What do you remember about big businesses from USI? Should we break up big companies? (Sherman Anti-Trust Act 1890) Or should government just regulate and keep an eye on them? (Interstate Commerce Commission – ICC 1887) Or socialism? (Government should own and operate all businesses)

Teddy Overview: Social Darwinist – Believed the US was in competition with other countries in the world Square Deal – “I shall see to it that every man has a square deal, no less and no more” (Progressive Ideals) Did not like when private interests interfered with the interests of the nation How could he believe in Progressivism and Social Darwinism?

Trusts – Kind of like monopolies… Competition in business is really important. Why? Trusts – A combination of firms or corporations formed by the legal agreement One group owning sales on all of one product They tended to reduce competition

Morgan (Great Northern and Northern Pacific Railroads) Result: New company: Northern Securities (TRUST) Teddy went after them citing the Sherman Anti-Trust Act – They were broken up
