2
Importance of Calling on the Name of the Lord Acts 2:21 21 And it shall come to pass That whoever calls on the name of the LORD Shall be saved. Rom. 10:13 13 For “whoever calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved.” Our salvation depends on it!

Usage of Phrase Throughout Scriptures Genesis 4:26 26 …Then men began to call on the name of the LORD. Genesis 12:8 8 …there [Abram] built an altar to the LORD and called on the name of the LORD. Phrase used from the time of the Patriarchs.

Usage of Phrase Throughout Scriptures 1 Kings 18:22-24 22 Then Elijah said to the people, “I alone am left a prophet of the LORD; but Baal’s prophets are four hundred and fifty men. 23 Therefore let them give us two bulls; and let them choose one bull for themselves, cut it in pieces, and lay it on the wood, but put no fire under it; and I will prepare the other bull, and lay it on the wood, but put no fire under it. 24 Then you call on the name of your gods, and I will call on the name of the LORD; and the God who answers by fire, He is God.” So all the people answered and said, “It is well spoken.” Elijah requested a demonstration of power.

Usage of Phrase Throughout Scriptures 2 Kings 5:11 11 But Naaman became furious, and went away and said, “Indeed, I said to myself, ‘He will surely come out to me, and stand and call on the name of the LORD his God, and wave his hand over the place, and heal the leprosy.’” Naaman expected the same.

Usage of Phrase Throughout Scriptures Psalm 99:6-8 6 Moses and Aaron were among His priests, And Samuel was among those who called upon His name They called upon the LORD, and He answered them. 7 He spoke to them in the cloudy pillar; They kept His testimonies and the ordinance He gave them. 8 You answered them, O LORD our God; You were to them God-Who-Forgives Though You took vengeance on their deeds. They called and He answered, with His law and His forgiveness.
7
Usage of Phrase Throughout Scriptures Lamentations 3:55 55 I called on Your name, O LORD From the lowest pit. 56 You have heard my voice “Do not hide Your ear From my sighing, from my cry for help.” Associated with prayer for God’s help.
8
Usage of Phrase Throughout Scriptures Zephaniah 3:9 9 “For then I will restore to the peoples a pure language That they all may call on the name of the LORD To serve Him with one accord. 12 I will leave in your midst A meek and humble people And they shall trust in the name of the LORD. Those who call on the name of the Lord trust in the name of the Lord.
9
Usage of Phrase Throughout Scriptures Phrase used first soon after Creation. Used in context of requesting a demonstration of the power of God. (Elijah, Naaman) Used in context of prayer, including praise, thanksgiving, and requesting help. God answered with His law and His forgiveness. His name may be called upon, but it must be trusted in humility as well. Not simply invoking the word “Jehovah”, rather appealing to His sovereignty and power.

Finding the New Testament Application Colossians 3:17 17 And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him. Matthew 21:23 23 Now when He came into the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people confronted Him as He was teaching, and said, “By what authority are You doing these things? And who gave You this authority?” To do something in the Lord’s name means to have received authority from Him.

Finding the New Testament Application Acts 4:7 7 And when they had set them in the midst, they asked, “By what power or by what name have you done this?” 1 Corinthians 5:4-5 4 In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, when you are gathered together, along with my spirit, with the power of our Lord Jesus Christ, 5 deliver such a one to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.
12
Finding the New Testament Application Matthew 7:21-23 21 “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven. 22 Many will say to Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?’ 23 And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!’” Acts 19:13, 15 13 Then some of the itinerant Jewish exorcists took it upon themselves to call the name of the Lord Jesus over those who had evil spirits, saying, “We exorcise you by the Jesus whom Paul preaches.” … 15 And the evil spirit answered and said, “Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are you?” Possible to use the Lord’s name falsely.

Finding the New Testament Application Acts 2:21, 38-39 21 And it shall come to pass That whoever calls on the name of the LORD Shall be saved. 38 Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call.” Were told that baptism would save them.
14
Finding the New Testament Application Acts 8:16 16 For as yet [the Holy Spirit] had fallen upon none of them. They had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. Acts 10:47-48 47 “Can anyone forbid water, that these should not be baptized who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have?” 48 And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Baptism in water, not Holy Spirit.
15
Finding the New Testament Application Acts 19:3-5 3 And he said to them, “Into what then were you baptized?” So they said, “Into John’s baptism.” 4 Then Paul said, “John indeed baptized with a baptism of repentance, saying to the people that they should believe on Him who would come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.” 5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. No baptism other than Christ’s is valid. (immersion in water for remission of sins)
16
Finding the New Testament Application Acts 22:16 16 “And now why are you waiting? Arise and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on the name of the Lord.” 1 Peter 3:21 21 There is also an antitype which now saves us - baptism (not the removal of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God), through the resurrection of Jesus Christ… Baptism is an appeal to God for forgiveness.
17
Finding the New Testament Application 2 Timothy 2:19 19 Nevertheless the solid foundation of God stands, having this seal: “The Lord knows those who are His,” and, “Let everyone who names the name of Christ depart from iniquity.” John 16:23 23 Most assuredly, I say to you, whatever you ask the Father in My name He will give you. Calling on the name of the Lord does not stop with baptism.
