Mary Shelley was an English novelist, short story writer, dramatist, essayist, biographer, and travel writer, best known for her Gothic novel Frankenstein: or, The Modern Prometheus (1818). She also edited and promoted the works of her husband, the Romantic poet and philosopher Percy Bysshe Shelley. Her father was the political philosopher William Godwin, and her mother was the philosopher and feminist Mary Wollstonecraft.

 Born: August 30, 1797, Somers Town, London, United Kingdom  Died: February 1, 1851, Chester Square, United Kingdom from brain cancer.  Spouse: Percy Bysshe Shelley (m. 1816–1822)

Mary Shelley’s mother died when she was eleven days old and was raised by her father, William Goodwin, along with her half-sister,Fanny Imlay. Goodman later marry a lady name Mary Jane Clairmont and they had a son later on in their marriage. Mary had a step and now a new baby brother, but the only problem was that she and her step mom very got along.

Mary’s stepmother decided that her stepsister Jane (later Claire) should be sent away to school, but she saw no need to educate Shelley. While she didn't have a formal education, she did make great use of her father's extensive library. Shelley could often be found reading, sometimes by her mother's grave. She also liked to daydream, escaping from her often challenging home life into her imagination.

 In 1814, Mary began a relationship with poet Percy Bysshe Shelley. Percy Shelley was a devoted student of her father, but he soon focused his attentions on Mary. Mary was pregnant with Percy's child in 1814. Over the next two years, she and Percy faced ostracism, constant debt, and the death of their prematurely born daughter. They married in late 1816 after the suicide of Percy Shelley's first wife, Harriet.
