3. Program Changes since last IBHE Review Athletic training has become its own major Majors have increased 47% from 582 in 2004 to 857 in 2010 Exercise Science majors: increased 118 to 252 (114%) Sport Management majors: increased 110 to 200 (82%) Teacher Certification majors: increased 354 to 405 (14%) 17 tenured/tenure-track faculty, 14 annually contracted faculty, 6 adjunct faculty, and 1 academic support professional (one additional tenure-track faculty and four additional annually contracted faculty hired from 2004 to 2010)

4. Increase in Degrees Granted In 2004, 83 degrees granted In 2009, 184 degrees granted Increase in Minority Students In 2004, 43 minority students In 2009, 112 minority students (160% increase)

5. Curriculum Changes Name change from Physical Education to Kinesiology and Sports Studies All three areas have conducted an extensive review of the curriculum New courses have been proposed and adopted, course revisions have occurred, and deletion of courses based on assessment results and student, supervisors, and alumni feedback received All three areas also have accrediting bodies that have guided curricular changes (NASPE, CoAES, COSMA)

6. Student Performance Assessment results have been very positive. Examples in each area: Teacher Certification – work samples, lesson plan assignments, and exit interviews demonstrated that 100% of students were at the proficient or advanced level Exercise Science – over 80% of interns earn a mean score of 80% or higher on their final evaluation Sport Management – all students received a score of 3 or higher on Likert scale ranging from 5-1 on internship evaluations (professional behavior, interpersonal skills, judgment, problem-solving skills, professional improvement, written communication, verbal communication, and listening skills)

7. Recent Graduate Survey Results 94% of students felt the quality of instruction was good, excellent, or superior 97% of students felt out of class assistance was good, excellent, or superior 94% of students felt academic advising was good, excellent, or superior 100% felt overall experience was good, excellent, or superior Alumni survey – over 90% felt their preparation for their current job was adequate, well, or very well

Ensure that KSS students meet the educational goals established in Eastern’s mission statement Enhance student literacy and oral communication Writing assignments, presentations, Basic Skills Test, student teaching and internship evaluations Encourage students to think critically and reflectively Class assignments, case studies, labs, reflection papers

Introduce students to knowledge central to responsible global citizenship Hold leadership positions Participate in recognized student organizations Volunteer at departmental, college, university, community, state events Diversity and global issues and perspectives are discussed in various courses Accrediting bodies all stress diversity and importance of other cultures

10. Learning Goals for Sport Management Comprehension of essential management concepts and principles learned in core sport management courses Develop written communication skills through undergraduate electronic writing portfolio requirement in writing intensive course Develop oral/verbal communication skills through class presentations Comprehend and utilize essential business management concepts and terminology in business administration courses Application of developed management skills in a practical, internship setting for a sports/fitness organization

11. Learning Goals for Exercise Science The student will demonstrate proficiency in assessing, designing, and implementing individual and group exercise and fitness programs for individuals who are apparently healthy and those with controlled disease. The student will adequately demonstrate both oral and written communication skills. The student will demonstrate competency in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (abilities) learning domains required of an entry-level Exercise Science professional as defined by the Committee on Accreditation for the Exercise Sciences and the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education programs

12. Learning Goals for the Teacher Certification Option Program completers will demonstrate basic skills in reading, writing, and math. The physical education student will demonstrate competence in the subject matter and professional knowledge of the Illinois Physical Education Learning/Teaching Standards The physical education major will be competent in basic first aid, AED and CPR Physical education teachers develop, teach, and assess developmentally appropriate lessons for secondary and elementary physical education students. Physical education teachers will successfully complete an exit interview during the KSS 3400/3401 courses. The physical education student will demonstrate competence in teaching physical education during the student teaching experience.

Future Roles the Programs Prepare for Our Student Corporate Fitness, Commercial Fitness, Fitness Clubs, YMCA’s, Cardiac Rehabilitation, Centers for the Elderly, Resorts, Physical Education Teachers, Coaching, Sports Facilities Management, Professional Teams, Minor League Teams, Sport Journalism, Director of Campus Recreation, Sports Information Director, Athletic Administration
