US influence on Iraq In recent news, Iraq has been dealing with ISIS situation and so has the US. Iraq for the last few years has been a parliamentary democracy thanks to the US for their influence the last few years. The US has imperialized the Iraqi government by providing economic/military aid, and establishing a sphere of influence.

For the last few years, the US has been wanting to shape the government in Iraq. Originally, Saddam Hussein, ruler of Iraq at the time, had Weapons of Mass Destruction and the US had to take action. Now that Iraq has a form of democracy, the US now tries to deal with the aftermath of the Iraqi War, one of those being ISIS. The US in the past has helped shape the Iraqi government but now the Iraqi government is unaware of how to deal with ISIS.

About ISIS ISIS is a product of the Iraq War, and the chaos we hear about them today is a result of the Iraqi government’s failure to stop them. ISIS’ goal is to carve out an Islamic State in Iraq and Syria. ISIS thrives on the tension between Iraq’s two largest religious groups, the Shias and Iraqi Sunnis. The chaos in Syria gave ISIS a lot of access to weaponry and money. The Iraqi army is a lot larger than ISIS, but is a complete mess.

W HAT HAS THE US DONE ? The US is has been helping Iraq ever since Saddam Hussein was in control, because he only wanted power. He was a man who did not care if he hurt the lives of other people as long as he could get something out of it. The US has help build a more stable government one that can be more equal to the people, once ISIS isn’t a main problem. US action has helped Iraq with military and economic aid, and military intelligence. The US has sent over 30,000 troops to assist Iraq.

 Though some may argue that before the US invasion Iraq was much more secular, the US has benefited the future of the people and government of Iraq.  The government has the basic fundamentals of what it is like to be a democracy. ISIS is a major problem that the Iraqi can’t seem to handle, the US is there only to assist.
