2 Poetry There are numerous forms of poetry. Some examples are:

3 ABC Poems An ABC poem has a series of lines that create a mood, picture, or feeling. Lines are made up of words and phrases. The first word of line 1 begins with an A, the first word of line 2 begins with a B etc.

5 Blank Verse Poetry Blank Verse is Poetry that is written in unrhymed iambic pentameter. Blank verse is often unobtrusive and the iambic pentameter form often resembles the rhythms of ordinary speech. William Shakespeare wrote most of his plays in blank verse.

7 Rhyme Poems Rhymes are types of poems which have the the repetition of the same or similar sounds at the end of two or more words most often at the ends of lines. This technique makes the poem easy to remember and is therefore often used in Nursery Rhymes. There are several derivatives of the term rhyme which include Double rhyme, Triple rhyme, Rising rhyme, Falling rhyme, Perfect and Imperfect rhymes.

9 Imagery Poems Imagery Poems draw the reader into poetic experiences by touching on the images and senses which the reader already knows. The use of images in this type of poetry serves to intensify the impact of the work.

11 Acrostic Poems Acrostic Poetry is where the first letter of each line spells a word, usually using the same words as in the title.

13 Shape Poems -Shape Poetry is also associated with Concrete Poetry
- Shape is one of the main things that separate prose and poetry. Poetry can take on many formats, but one of the most inventive forms is for the poem to take on the shape of its subject. Therefore, if the subject of your poem were of a flower, then the poem would be shaped like a flower. If it were of a fish, then the poem would take on the shape of a fish.

16 5W’s Poems Each line contains information about either who, what, when, where or why. ex. Canadian Soldier Crouching in a tunnel Waiting for a bomb to drop In the dead of night Protecting our country

17 IS Poems Writers describe what something is or what something means to them. Each line begins with ______is_____. ex. War is fighting in a cold wet field Peace is lying in a cozy warm bed. War is not knowing if you will live through the day. Peace is happiness. etc....

18 Your Assignment: Create a Remembrance Day Poem to express your feelings about War. Choose your form of poetry. Use blank paper as these will be submitted to the legion for prizes. These poems will be marked. Information on Remembrance Day Ceremonies can be found at
