2. Why Do We Have Remembrance Day? There is a tradition of remembrance observed by Canadians every year at the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month.This tradition dates back to the First World War when the guns fell silent, marking the end of military conflict and the Remembrance of those who would never return home. 5. What Would You Do? On a piece of loose-leaf respond to the following question: –Would you be willing to drop everything you have right now to fight for your country? Why or why not? (Respond honestly. Your response will be kept confidential between me and you.)

6. Poetry inspired by war Many men and women who lived through war were inspired to write about their experiences. We will be studying some of these pieces of writing, and then writing our own poetry on the theme of remembrance.

8. Contests For many, many years, The Royal Canadian Legion has sponsored annual Poster, Essay and Literary Contests that are open to all Canadian school children. There are four categories: –Essay –Poem –Poster –Video

9. Contests You will be required to complete an entry for two of the four (NB- if your parents do not want these entries to be forwarded to the contest, that’s ok. You can still get your marks for completing them for class). You must complete a poem and an essay. You can choose to complete either a poster or a video as well, if you want to.

10. Essay/Poem Regulations Entries will be marked on the basis of originality of thought, expression, presentation, grammar, spelling and Canadian content. Candidates will submit: – an essay of not more than 500 words – a poem of not more than 32 lines. 14. Poster Regulations Entries will be no larger than 56cm x 71cm Entries will be judged on originality, expression of designated subject, drawing and illustration. COMPUTER GENERATED ENTRIES WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED You may choose to do either: – Colour poster: Full colour – Black and White: Pencil, Charcoal and/or India Ink

15. Poster Regulations The poster shall reflect REMEMBRANCE with a Canadian theme. If symbols are used, Canadian symbols shall be preeminent. Such national symbols are Canadian and provincial flags, coats of arms, and representative flowers, birds or animals, as well as all forms of Canadian historical and current military dress. Candidates will sign their posters in the lower right-hand corner and attach a piece of paper showing their name, address, age, grade, name and address of the school and the local Legion branch.
