Intro to Representation and Film
2
A Representation Recap What is meant by representation? What is meant by demographic? What factors determine a demographic? What is meant by stereotype? Remember: the media is responsible for ‘constructing’ representations.
3
Today’s Learning Objectives Develop representation within film trailer productions by analysing the representations of individuals and social groups
4
By the end of the lesson YOU should be able to answer the following 3 questions: What social groups does the trailer represent? How far are their representations typical and how far are they not? In what ways can the representations be compared with similar kinds of text from real media/industry?
5
Linking to film Quick Task: you will be given a specific area of representation or demographic. Split your page in half and on one side note down the film and the other note down the representational stereotype. e.g: Gender: ‘Bend It Like Beckham’ – Girls shouldn’t play football. Gender Class Ethnicity Age Region
6
Representational Analysis Watch this trailer for ‘Gran Torino’. Make notes on the question below What demographics are being represented? What can you say about the way they are being represented? What technical aspects assist in our understanding of their representation (mise-en-scene, sound, cinematography editing). Are there any stereotypes in evidence? Production Work Analysis: turn to the student film analysis in the booklet. Lets look at a couple of old student trailers and make notes on issues of representation.
