4 ©DLR, Inc. 2006Version 11152006 4 What is a Digital Book?  A digital audio book is the digital version of a book on tape or book on CD.  A digital eBook is the digital version of a published physical book.  Digital titles can be enjoyed in many ways:  On your PC or PDA.  Burned to CD.  Transferred to a portable WMA / WMV device. 5 ©DLR, Inc. 2006Version 11152006 5 Access to Digital Titles Enjoy Digital Titles at home, at work, or when you travel.  To access digital audio titles, you will need:  A valid library card.  A personal computer.  Free digital media software.  Brief access to the Internet: The free digital media software allows you to enjoy a digital title without being connected to the Internet. 7 ©DLR, Inc. 2006Version 11152006 7 Introduction to Digital Rights Management (DRM)  OverDrive Media Console: Automatically manages licensing as each title is downloaded. Windows Media Player requires a one-time security upgrade to enable playback of DRM-protected files.  Adobe Reader prompts for “activation” during the first download of an eBook.  Digital Rights Information is provided for each title on your digital library site. 9 ©DLR, Inc. 2006Version 11152006 9 How to Browse and Select Titles  Browse and search digital titles from Greenwich Library’s digital site.  Click on a title image to review a short description, author information, format, and digital rights.  Next, add selections to your Cart.  If a digital title is not available, you may “Place a hold”, and receive an email notification when the title is available. The system tracks how many digital titles you have checked out, your hold items, and items in your Cart. 10 ©DLR, Inc. 2006Version 11152006 10 Proceed To Checkout  After selecting digital titles, click on the ‘Proceed to Checkout’ link.  Enter your library card number, without spaces.  After the card is verified, titles are ready for download.  The Download Page features a link to download the free digital media software.  The free digital media software must be installed before titles can be successfully downloaded. OverDrive Media Console (.WMA)  For audio books on PCs.  After download, you may burn an audio title to a regular audio CD (depending on digital rights for the title).  An audio title may be transferred to a compatible portable device (WMA) capable of playing the DRM-protected format (depending on digital rights for the title).  Digital Rights Information is provided for each title on your digital library site. 13 ©DLR, Inc. 2006Version 11152006 13 Software for OverDrive Audio Titles  Two applications are required:  OverDrive Media Console (Free download from your DLR web site).  Windows Media ® Player Series 9+ (Free download from Microsoft).  OverDrive Audio Titles are in Windows Media Audio (WMA) format.  For use on Windows ® Operating Systems (Win 98 SE and higher). 14 ©DLR, Inc. 2006Version 11152006 14  Click on the ‘Download’ button.  Download commences by first transferring a small license file.  When downloading an OverDrive Audio Book, the OverDrive Media Console launches automatically.  Select which parts to download.  Enjoy listening to the first part as remaining parts are downloading. 16 ©DLR, Inc. 2006Version 11152006 16 OverDrive Media Explorer Features Control + P = PLAY Control + S = STOP F9 = Volume DOWN F10 = Volume UP See OMC Help for more The OverDrive Media Explorer was designed specifically for the playback of multimedia titles.  Speed adjustment (requires Windows XP).  Jump back 15 seconds.  Resume from furthest point.  Bookmark.  Hotkeys:  OMC also works with JAWS, Window-Eyes, and other screen readers. 17 ©DLR, Inc. 2006Version 11152006 17 Burn / Transfer Your Audio Titles  After download, you may burn an audio title to a regular audio CD. Each part fits on one CD.  Most publishers license burning. Some exceptions include: Time Warner, Harper Collins, Naxos, Books On Tape, and BBC Audiobooks America.  Or, transfer to a portable audio device capable of playing the DRM-protected WMA format. OverDrive Media Console allows you to burn to a CD or transfer to a portable WMA device using Windows Media Player. 18 ©DLR, Inc. 2006Version 11152006 18 Compatible Devices for Audio / Music / Video  Device must play DRM-protected Windows Media Audio (WMA) files.  Audio books: The device must either support the bit rate of 32kbps or be able to transcode 32kbps files to a supported bit rate.  iPods: Unfortunately the iPod does not support DRM-protected Windows Media Audio (WMA) files, the format in which our audio titles are delivered. We are hopeful that Apple and Microsoft® can reach an agreement that would enable WMA support on the iPod. Automatic Check In - Audio  The lending period for Greenwich Library is 14 days.  When an audio title is due, it will automatically expire and be checked in.  After an audio title has expired, it will remain on the your PC, but can no longer be opened unless a new license for the title is downloaded.  You can check out the title again, download a new license, and listen to the previously downloaded files.  Once you have finished a title, the title may be deleted from the OverDrive Media Console. 21 ©DLR, Inc. 2006Version 11152006 21 Transfer to a Device 1. Open OverDrive Media Console. 2. Select the title to transfer. 3. Click the ‘Transfer’ button. 4. The OverDrive Media Console Transfer Wizard will open.  Connect your portable device to your computer.  Click ‘Next’ to continue.  When the device is detected, the ‘Confirm’ Screen will appear.  Select the ‘Parts’ you wish to transfer.  Choose ‘Advanced Options’ to modify the storage folder or file name (optional). Click ‘OK’ to continue.  Click ‘Next’ to transfer the selected parts to your portable device.  OverDrive Media Console will test for storage space. You will have the option to delete titles if the device is full.  After the transfer is complete, you may disconnect your portable device. 5. Click ‘Finish’ to close the wizard. Transfer an audio title to a portable WMA device (OMC 2.1).

22 ©DLR, Inc. 2006Version 11152006 22 Burn to a CD  Open OverDrive Media Console.  Click on the ‘Transfer / Burn’ button. Windows Media Player will open.  In Windows Media Player, click on the ‘Burn’ tab.  Click on ‘Burn List’ in the left pane.  Select the title to burn to CD.  One Part will fit on one CD.  Insert a blank CD to your CD drive.  Click ‘Start Burn’ to burn the title to CD. Burn an audio title to CD (Windows Media Player 10).

Adobe eBooks (.PDF format)  Adobe eBooks are text-based titles in PDF format which are read using Adobe Reader.  For use on PCs, Macs, and PDAs (Palm Devices, Pocket PCs, etc.)  Version 6.0.1 or higher required. Enabled the first time an eBook is downloaded and opened.  Named Activation: Allows you to access Adobe eBooks on multiple devices. Requires.NET Passport registration with name and email address. Activation matches users with devices and prevents illegal file sharing. 28 ©DLR, Inc. 2006Version 11152006 28 Adobe Reader Features  Adobe eBooks are stored in File > Digital Editions > My Digital Editions (version 7.x). Double click an eBook to begin reading.  Adobe eBooks checked out from the library will appear with a clock symbol in the upper right corner.  Use the thumbnail view to display cover images of eBooks. OR, switch to the details view to sort by title, author, category, or date last accessed.  Organize an eBook collection by default categories and create new categories. Titles checked out through your Digital Library will appear with a clock symbol. Organize your titles using Categories. 29 ©DLR, Inc. 2006Version 11152006 29 Adobe Reader Features  Search: Find all instances of a word or phrase in an eBook.  Read Out Loud: Adobe Reader can read the book out loud if the feature is licensed / enabled for that title. This is a text-to- speech machine reader.  Comments: Add comments, highlights, and stamps to your eBooks. To display the Commenting Tools, click on the ‘Comment and Markup’ button on the Tasks Toolbar (version 7.x).  Embedded Clips: Adobe Reader plays video and audio content embedded in eBooks, such as clips of dialogue or sound effects (with appropriate hardware and software installed). 30 ©DLR, Inc. 2006Version 11152006 30 Automatic Check In – Adobe eBooks  The lending period for Greenwich Library is 14 days.  When an Adobe eBook is due, it will automatically expire and be checked in.  After an eBook has expired, it can no longer be opened.  To check out an Adobe eBook again, first delete the title. For Adobe Reader (v.7.x):  Right-click the thumbnail, and select ‘Remove’.  Open Windows Explorer and go to My Documents > My Digital Editions. Delete any copies of the title saved in this folder.  Adobe eBooks can be returned early. (See “Quick Tip” on this slide).  When finished with the title it is okay to delete the title from the computer or device.  You will never accrue late fees with Digital eBooks! QUICK TIP: How to early return your Adobe eBooks (Version 7.x): File > Digital Editions > My Digital Editions > Opposite Click on Title > Return To Lender. Digital Library 101
