2 Background Information Signed in Poland, in 1955 Originally called ‘The Treaty of Friendship, Co-operation and Mutual Assistance’ Between Albania, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, East Germany, Hungary, Poland, Romania, and Soviet Union

3 Why It Was Made Military Treaty Communists version of NATO Bound the nation to sign it to come to aid of others if any of the other nations were attacked To protect Soviet Union if invaded by Allies

4 What It Tried to Accomplish Tried to keep Communism in the Satellite Nations and Eastern Europe Oppose capitalist or democratic uprisings Kept East European Allies under Soviet’s military and political control Counteract military alliance of NATO

5 What Soviets Tried to do With It Soviet Union also used Warsaw Pact to develop East European socialist armies and tie them to its military strategy Gave support to USSR as leading socialist power of the world, level with U.S in capitalist Intimidated Europe because of Soviet Troops crushing rebellions Support USSR’s foreign policies
