2 Essay~ Columbian Exchange Historical Content~ Tells you what is going on in the time period of the essay Lets read the Historical Context for our essay now… Main ideas???

3 Task: What you have to do in this essay This task is to…  Describe the negative and positive effects of the Columbian Exchange  Describe the results for both the Natives and Explorers  AND: Tell me which group you think had the greater benefit from exchange

4 Rubric: How will your final essay be graded? 10 points for the Positive effects for Europeans 10 points for the Negative effects for Europeans 10 points for the Positive effects for Natives 10 points for the Negative effects for the Natives 5 points for Proper format, Intro, Conclusion, 4 body paragraphs 5 points for spelling, grammar, and sentence structure

5 ALSO graded will be… 10 points for a completed chart 10 points for completing the outline 10 points for creating a rough copy All of these pre-writing items are worth 30 points. All must be completed and handed in too!!! Don’t lose easy points!!!

6 Extra Credit opportunities too… 2 pts. for handing in the essay earlier than due date complete with all parts!!! Don’t hand in sloppy work early!! 2 pts. For handing in the essay typed These would be added to the score on your final essay

7 Three types of Introductions… Rhetorical Question-asks a question to draw attention to the topic. Example: What if Columbus had not set sail in 1492 for the new world? Would the Columbian Exchange ever have happened in history? Can you think of a question to start off our essay??

8 Another… Imaginary Scenario- Create a small story or tell an anecdote about the topic Example: Can you imagine a world without sugar, coffee, or chocolate? Those are just a few of the things exchanged between Europeans and Natives in the Columbian Exchange. Can you think of one for our essay???

9 And another… Formal Introduction- facts, statistics, quotes, research, information, to introduce the topic Example: Did you know that it is believed that 24 million Natives died within 100 years of Columbus sailing to the new world? That is around 95% of the total population of Native Americans. Can you think of a fact, statistic, info to start off our essay? Shock factor?

10 Outline… Use the Chart we did together to fill in the facts This helps to organize our writing Come up with an intro paragraph for each sentence and the facts you will include Your final essay will be in MORE detail and using better words…

11 Restating the Thesis Statement in a conclusion paragraph… Take the words and re-work them. You are re-stating your idea If your thesis statement in intro is… The Europeans had far more benefits than the Natives from contact. Restatement for Conclusion could be: In conclusion, the Europeans had numerous benefits from the Columbian Exchange

12 Word Choice and details… Lets fix these sentences and make them better We want to use words that are BETTER… Example 1:  The Europeans were mean.  The Natives were hurt badly.  The Natives got horses.
