Counting back change can be very challenging even for me, Rusty Nickel. I have created a PowerPoint of one of my favorite challenge problems – ENJOY!

Many times the customer will provide additional money like the three cents above which can be very confusing for the person trying to count back the correct change. The customer is not trying to cause trouble; they want less change in their pocket! Use the mouse to find out how I, Rusty Nickel, count back the correct change!

NOTE The additional 3 cents provide by the customer offsets the 13 cents found in the purchase price of $6.13. To simplify, the $.03 can be subtracted from both the $6.13 and the $10.03. Equation used $10.03 = change + $6.13 $10.03 - $.03 = change + $6.13 - $.03 $10.00 = change + $6.10 Think of the problem now as $6.10 instead of $6.13 and $10.00 instead of $10.03. Adjusting the problem simplifies the process and guarantees a happy customer.

NOTE: Two quarters could have been used if a half-dollar was not available. Using a half-dollar is a better choice because the customer has less change in their pocket.
