1. Week of: February 17 th - February 20 th News to Know SPECIALS SHOWCASE: The kindergarten and 1 st grade Specials Showcase is schedule for February 26 th in the evening. An information sheet went home earlier this week. I hope to see you there. I was able to watch their rehearsal the other day and it looks like it’s going to be a really fun show! AUCTION: The 10 th annual PTO auction is coming up on February 28 th. For more information, check out the school’s Digital Backpack or refer to the invitation that was sent home in your child’s green folder on Tuesday. EDGE CLASSES: The registration period for EDGE classes closes TODAY! If you have any last minute requests, check out the Digital Backpack for someone to contact. Classes begin the first week on March. MYSTERY READER: There are a lot of empty slots coming up in our Mystery Reader schedule. Please feel free to sign up to visit the classroom and read a couple books to the class…but remember to keep it a secret. DAILY 5: I just wanted to complement the whole class on how well they have been doing in their Daily 5 reading rotation. They have been working so hard and so quietly for the last couple of week while being completely independent! Please spread the word that Mr. Dolan and VERY proud of their work. Rowdy Readers This week we started a weather unit with great books, activities and conversation starters. We focused on nonfiction books and understanding that nonfiction authors have a purpose when writing and that purpose is to teach us something interesting about something that is real! We also worked with the long and short /e/ sound along with the digraphs /th/, /sh/, /ch/ and /wh/. The students worked hard this week with these sounds locating them at the beginning of words and at the end. Some books that we read this week include: A Rainy Day How Thunder and Lightning Came to Be Frog and Locust Look at the Weather What Can You Do We also added new sight words and vocabulary words this week. The new sight words for the week were “this” and “do”. Our count is now up to 19 for sight words. The new vocabulary words for the week were: weather, blustery, chilly, drizzle and cloud. Remember, these words help to improve oral language. Math Madness This week we worked on solving addition problems in reverse. Our activities centered around having the sum and finding different ways to add number to get to that sum. We played whole groups games, cut and sorted number cards and practiced our thinking out loud strategy. Next week we will begin tackling subtraction!
