lunes el veinte de febrero Tense Revision
2
Write down at least 10 –AR verbs in your book in the time that it takes me to complete the register. Para empezar…
3
By the end of the lesson we will be able to… Understand what is meant by verb, infinitive and conjugation. Explain when each different tense should be used. Identify each tense based on the ending of the verb. Los objetivos
4
Dictionary definition: (in traditional grammar) any of a large class of words in a language that serve to indicate the occurrence or performance of an action, the existence of a state or condition, etc. In English, such words as run, make, do, and the like are verbs. In other words: A verb is a doing word. What is a verb?
5
Dictionary definition: a form of the verb not inflected for grammatical categories such as tense and person and used without an overt subject. In English, the infinitive usually consists of the word to followed by the verb e.g. to speak. In other words: The infinitive is a verb in its unchanged form, it is the verb as we find it in the dictionary e.g. hablar What is an infinitive?
6
Dictionary definition: The complete set of the inflections of a given verb. In other words: Conjugation is simply taking off the ending of a verb and adding a new one. What is conjugation?
7
Example of conjugation

People often try to translate phrases too literally, for example… How do I say “I speak” in Spanish? Right well the dictionary says that the word for “I” is “yo” in Spanish so that’s the first bit I need. Now I just need the word for “speak” and the dictionary says “hablar” so that must be it. So “I speak” in Spanish is “yo hablar” Common Mistake
9
In Spanish they very rarely use the words for “I, you, he, she, we, they” etc. When we conjugate a verb in Spanish each ending is different depending on who is completing the action. Therefore we do not need the subject pronoun as we can just look at the ending to see who the verb refers to. This actually makes life a lot easier for us because “I speak” is just one word in Spanish: “hablo” Avoiding that mistake
10
Arrange yourselves into groups of no more than 5 people. In your groups arrange the cards into 4 columns. One column for each tense that we have covered. Each column should have a definition and examples of verbs in that tense. You have 5 minutes! Card Sort
11
I am going to divide the class into 4 groups. Each group will have a tense each to work on. Your task is to produce a fact sheet on your tense that can be photocopied and used be everyone in the class. Your factsheet must include the following: Description of the tense, when is it used? Endings for ER, IR and AR verbs. Any important irregular verbs in that tense. Your factsheet must be clear and easy to understand. A problem shared is a problem halved!
12
Look at the verbs on the following slides. See if you can identify the tense of the following verbs. Write the tense you believe they are on your mini whiteboard and show your answer when asked. Remember do not worry if you are unsure about some of them. It is impossible to remember all of the endings after just one lesson! Para terminar…
