1 Cell Transport Cell Transport * Moving substances (such as food, water, waste, and oxygen and CO2) in and out of cells through the cell membrane * There are 2 different types of Cell Transport 1. Diffusion How most materials move in and out of cells Osmosis Type of passive transport that moves water across a cell membrane Examples of Diffusion: 1.Red blood cells move oxygen from lungs to all parts of the body 2.For example, the movement of food or sugar across the cell membrane For example, in plant cells, osmosis keep plants from wilting because it causes water to flow into the cell. If soil is dry, water will leave the plant by osmosis. This causes a plant to wilt and eventually die. Passive Transport Type of diffusion that is energy-free. 2. Active Transport Type of transport that requires energy to move large substances across a cell membrane through a carrier One-third of all the cell’s energy is used to transport substances this way

2 _________ Transport _________ Transport * Moving substances (such as food, water, waste, and oxygen and CO2) in and out of cells through the ________ ____________ * There are 2 different types 1. _____________________________ How most materials move in and out of cells ____________________ Type of passive transport that moves ______________ across a cell membrane Examples of Diffusion: 1.Red blood cells move ___________ from lungs to all parts of the body 2.For example, the movement of food or ____________ across the ___________ membrane For example, in plant cells, _______________ keep plants from wilting because it causes _________ to flow into the cell. If soil is dry, ___________ will leave the plant by ________________. This causes a plant to wilt and eventually die. _____________ Transport Type of diffusion that is ___________-free. 2. _________________ _____________ Type of transport that requires _____________ to move large substances across a cell membrane through a carrier One-third of all the cell’s energy is used to transport substances this way **Use page A10 and A11 to fill in the blanks

3 DiffusionActive Transport Use the pictures on Page A11 to draw pictures of Diffusion and Active Transport Diffusion is like: _____________________________ because ______________________ Active Transport is like: _____________________________ because ______________________

4 Video Questions 1.When do red blood cells become wrinkled? 2.Does Passive transport require energy? 3.The door to the ice rink is compared to what? 4.What is it called when water diffuses across a cell membrane? 5.How does anything diffuse? 6.Does Active Transport require energy? 7.Can molecules move from low concentration to high concentration? 8.How is cystic fibrosis related to active transport? 9.How do substances that are too big fit through the cell membrane?
