1 Welcome to our classroom, parents of 5Mc!

2 The importance of our Mission and Vision "The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams." - Eleanor Roosevelt Mission: Park Street School is dedicated to igniting children's passions and helping them overcome their challenges. Therefore Park Street Staff will demonstrate an extraordinary commitment to educating the whole child through the use of best educational practices, in a world class learning environment. Vision: Preparing children to achieve their dreams and become model citizens in a global culture. Students will learn the way the world works and how to improve it.

3 Subjects Literacy: Mme McInnis (90 mins-everyday) Math: Mme McInnis (90 mins-everyday) English: Mme. Cahill (60 mins-3xweek) Science/Social Studies/Health*: 30-60mins (4xweek) Art*: Integrated into other subjects. Music: Mr. Zaat (60 mins-2xweek) Phys.Ed.:Ms. McAuley, Mrs. Stewart (30mins- 3xweek)

4 Literacy-on a typical day Oral-we chat! How was your night? What did you do? Ortho-word work, different format, not as much testing. Writing-Journal-prompts are conversation starters… Reading-as a group. For now, I read and then we hear the audio version. So, we are supposed to be hearing the text twice. Activity-that accompanies our reading. Listening-Read aloud. I read them a story (modelling). However, I give them reasons for listening. Quick questions-who? what?when? where? Or comprehension questions etc. Please note that every morning from 8:10-8:25am students come in and read in French or Journal.

5 Literacy Outcomes for this reporting period. Respect studying short biographies Reading: develop strategies using predictions, connections Writing: understand the structure and a biography, organization, adding personal tone Publicity studying publicities and commercials Reading: determine what is important, getting the message Writing: Word choice Continuously working on language and cursive.

6 Student Comments " Wow-it's incredible to be that determined! I respect that." "I love how people told her she couldn't do it, so then she wanted to do it more." "I like how after they've accomplished something they 'pay it forward' or use their name for good use."

7 Math on a typical day Warm-up- item bank question. (drawing, equation, answer, sentence***) (follow provincial exam format of Knowledge, Communication, Problem Solving to correct) Review…go over terms and problems. New lesson (elaboration on new concept). Work on new concept (individual/group/partner-I circulate) Correct-review Math journal. Please note: Starting soon-daily minute math. Test/quizzes every Friday (formative and summative assessment)

8 Mathematics Outcomes for this reporting period. Regularities and simple equations Natural numbers (estimating, representing) Starting multiplication and division (exploring different strategies, mental math etc.) Carry-over methods/at home methods.

9 Homework Homework will be posted every day on my teacher page. Usual homework includes: IXL Math (1 hour per week) Reading (1 hour per week-After Christmas 75 mins) Ortho is done at school this year. Some odds and ends activities will be posted on the site. Textbooks always available to take home.

10 Other Data Notebooks (LIM)-I am proud of… I am proud of wall… Personalized Writing Portfolio (SIP) Student desks. Grade 5 social issues/preparation for Grade 6.

11 Displicine Policy Follow class expectations (will be posted shortly) Infraction/Issue #1-Name on the board. Infraction/Issue #2-checkmark beside your name. Infraction/Issue #3-stay in at next recess. Infraction/Issue #4-call home. Infraction/Issue #5-Administration (green form). Please note: I use my discretion. If there are any issues please do not hesitate to contact me.

12 Reward System Student bank accounts. Students are given ‘money’ for positive behaviour, which is deposited in their bank account and when they have a sum it can be used to buy prizes. Prizes are staying away from food items and focus on non-food rewards and the ‘experience’.
