2 Government has 4 prorities A greater focus on the basics Better curriculum choice More stretching options and activities New ways to tackle disengagement

3 Greater focus on the basics Key Stage 3 is being reviewed Functional skills in English, maths and ICT are being developed A framework of personal thinking and learning skills has been devised Personal development in the curriculum is being reviewed

4 Key Stage 3 Review There will be continued focus on the core subjects English, maths and science Programmes of study in foundation subjects are being reviewed Tests will continue in the core subjects,with an additional online test in ICT from 2008 Teacher assessment in foundation subjects will be moderated, and a bank of standardised optional tests and activities will be developed

5 A coherent skills framework A single framework of personal,learning and thinking skills for 11-19 year olds Team workers Self Managers Independent enquirers Reflective learners Creative participators

6 Integrated Personal Development There need to be clear links between RE, sex education, citizenship, PSHE, work related learning, careers and enterprise Learners will benefit when the links are emphasised in the way in which they are taught Co-ordination can create time in the curriculum Close links to the skills framework In the best programmes personal development is integral to the whole curriculum

7 Qualifications, Curriculum Development and Choice Greater choice New National Curriculum and qualification entitlement General Diploma Specialist Diploma-14 lines at level 1, 2 and 3

8 Specialised Diplomas From 2008:  ICT (Information Communication Technology)  engineering  health and social care  creative and media industries  construction and the built environment from 2009:  land based and environmental  manufacturing  hair and beauty  business administration and finance  hospitality and catering from September 2010:  in public services,  sport and leisure,  retail  travel and tourism.

11 GCSEs will change 2006-new Science GCSEs, two tier maths 2009-GCSEs in English and ICT to include functional skills, most other GCSEs revised following course work review 2010-GCSE maths to include functional skills, further maths qualification available, including possibility of a double award

12 Key Stage 4 Engagement programme For disaffected and low attaining students in mainstream schools A personalised programme A flexible programme An increased development of personal and social skills A strong work focus An emphasis on functional skills Additional high quality advice supprt and guidance Will build on strong partnerships

13 Foundation learning tier Joint LSC and QCA project Aims to establish coherent personalised programmes at Entry and level1 supported by units and qualifications from the Framework of Achievement For learners aged 14+ in a wide range of settings Based around 3 areas:basic skills, personal and social development and vocational and/or subject –based learning

14 Timeframe All areas establish partnerships –Sept 2006 Area prospectus developed-Sept 2006 with courses for Sept 2007 Pilots and trials of engagement/foundation programmes 2006 Specialised diplomas available in ICT, Health and Social Care, Engineering, Creative and media and Construction-Sept 2008 Revised A Levels available for 2008 GCSEs in English and ICT to include functional skills- Sept 2009
