Classroom Safety

Staff Responsibility Supervise the children at all times. Maintain at least the minimum adult-child ratio. Develop safety limits. Provide a safe environment. Practice fire safety. Develop plans for weather emergencies. Know procedures for accidental poisoning.

Supervising Children Keep your back to the wall. Move closer to an area if you observe children who need assistance or redirection. Constantly observe children who are not involved. Make sure there is enough space for furniture and equipment.

Toys and Safety Hazards Using toys in ways for which they were not designed Using toys that are too advanced for them Sharp or splintered edges Lack durability

Playground Safety They must be sure to plan the playground with safety in mind. Staff members must select safe equipment. Staff must evaluate existing equipment for safety. Staff are responsible for supervising children on the playground.

Driving a Center’s Vehicle Should have safety door locks and seat belts Do not allow children to put their arms or heads out of the vehicle’s windows. First aid kits in each vehicle

Walkthrough Safety Keep floors dry. Keep windows closed unless sturdy screens are in place. Cover stairs with carpet or rubber treads. Stairway well lighted and free of clutter. Install railings on stairways. Electrical outlets covered Avoid extension cords.
