SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED DISEASES
INFECTIOUS DISEASES THAT ARE SPREAD FROM PERSON TO PERSON THROUGH SEXUAL CONTACT.
2
EPIDEMIC OCCURRENCES OF DISEASES IN WHICH MANY PEOPLE IN THE SAME PLACE AND AT THE SAME TIME ARE INFECTED.
3
STD’S Transmitted – HOW? Preventable – Most are curable – Who gets it?
Casual contact Sexual contact Air born Preventable – YES Most are curable – Who gets it? ANYONE NO VACCINES
4
STD FACTS IN THE U.S. 65 MILLION PEOPLE ARE LIVING WITH AN INCURABLE STD. THE U.S HAS THE HIGHEST RATE OF STD’S IN THE INDUSTRIAL WORLD. STD’S ACCOUNT FOR MORE THAN 85% OF THE MOST COMMON COMMUNICABLE DISEASES IN THE U.S.
5
STD’S GO UNDIAGNOSED AND UNTREATED
INFECTED PEOPLE ASYMPTOMATIC DONT GET TREATED CONTINUE TO SPREAD TOO EMBARRASSED TO SEEK TREATMENT
6
HIGH RISK BEHAVIORS SEXUALLY ACTIVE WITH MORE THAN ONE PERSON
UNPROTECTED SEX SELECTING HIGH RISK PARTNERS USING ALCOHOL/DRUGS

STD FACTS IN THE U.S. TEENS MAKE UP ¼ OF ESTIMATED 15 MILLION NEW CASES OF STD’S EACH YEAR. 10,000 TEENS ARE INFECTED EVERY DAY IN THE U.S.
8
CONSEQUENCES OF STD’S INCURABLE CAUSE CANCER (HPV AND HEPATITIS B)
INFERTILITY PASSED FROM MOM TO BABY
9
BACTERIAL STD’S GONORRHEA
3RD MOST COMMON COMMUNICABLE DISEASE NOT ALWAYS OBVIOUS Symptoms: appear between 3 days to 3 weeks after sexual contact with an infected person. Men – Whitish discharge from the penis, burning sensation during urination, lymph glands in the groin may become enlarged and tender. Women – Slight discharge from vagina, burning sensation during urination, abnormal menstruation, abdominal pain and tenderness. 50% OF FEMALES HAVE NO SYMPTOMS Diagnosis – physical exam, urine sample, specimen of infected area TREATMENT:ANTIBIOTICS(tetracycline and penicillin) Untreated: sterility, damage to either fallopian tube or vas deferens, and damage to joints and tissues

11
BACTERIAL STD CHLAMYDIA
Cause: several different kinds of bacteria like organisms that infect the urethra or the cervix MOST PEOPLE ARE ASYMPTOMATIC Symptoms : Usually occurs 1-3 weeks after exposure MEN – Pain during urination and discharge from penis WOMEN – (not obvious) unusual discharge from vagina, pain in pelvic region, painful urination CAN LEAD TO PID IN FEMALES Most prevalent in the US 40% OF CASES ARE TEENS UNTREATED MEN – results in chronic inflammation of the urethra and infertility Women – Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID) TREATMENT: ANTIBIOTIC Cannot undo damage that has already occurred DIAGNOSIS: URINE SPECIMEN OF INFECTED AREA
12
PID PICTURES PELVIC INFLAMMATORY DISEASE
13
BACTERIAL STD SYPHILIS -SPIROCHETE
CHANCRE - PAINLESS SORE APPEARS AT SITE OF INFECTION SPREADS THROUGH BLOODSTREAM LEFT UNTREATED DAMAGE HEART. LIVER, BRAIN TREATMENT: ANTIBIOTIC DIAGNOSIS: BLOOD TEST
14
Syphilis (one of the most dangerous)
Caused by bacteria 4 Stages 1. Primary (chancre appears: small, moist, painful open sore in the genital area 2. Secondary (moves into bloodstream) Symptoms: genital discomfort, fever/headache, swollen glands, rashes, white patches in the mouth, temp. baldness 3. Latent (bacteria attacks internal organs – primarily heart and the brain) Outward signs disappear – contagious mostly to babies 4. Late (serious heart problems) Damage to brain and spinal cord Causes: blindness, insanity, crippling, DEATH

SYPHILIS SPIROCHETE,RASH,CHANCRE
17
TRICHOMONIASIS CAUSED BY MICROSCOPIC PROTOZOAN THAT OFTEN CAUSES INFECTION IN THE VAGINA, URETHRA, AND BLADDER. 5 MILLION NEW CASES EACH YEAR IN THE U.S. MAY CAUSE VAGINITIS (INFLAMMATION OF VAGINA) ODOR, ITCHING, DISCHARGE MALES USUALLY ASYMPTOMATIC
18
VIRAL STD’S VIRUS ALWAYS REMAINS IN THE BODY SYMPTOMS CAN COME AND GO
NOT CUREABLE ONLY CAN TREAT SYMPTOMS
19
HEPATITIS B NAUSEA,VOMITING, LOSS OF APPETITE, JAUNDICE
90% ASYMPTOMATIC CAN CAUSE CIRRHOSIS CAN CAUSE CANCER OF THE LIVER VACCINE PREVENTS
20
VIRAL STD GENITAL HERPES
45 MILLION IN U.S. AGES 12 AND OLDER INFECTED. 1 MILLION NEW INFECTIONS EACH YEAR. PAINFUL BLISTERS ON GENITALS CONTRIBUTE TO SPREADING OF HIV
21
GENITAL HERPES TYPE I – COLD SORES TYPE II – GENTIAL SORES
NO CURE ONLY TREATMENT FOR SYMPTOMS PASSED FROM ONE PARTNER TO ANOTHER DURING SEXUAL CONTACT WHEN BLISTERS ARE ACTIVE/NONACTIVE
22
HERPES Genital Herpes – HSV-2 Caused by a virus (blister like sores)
Symptoms THERE IS NO CURE Treatment can reduce symptoms Flare Ups (outbreaks) Caused by – Stress, sexual intercourse, sunlight, drugs and alcohol Highly contagious at this time Virus contagious to infants (Cesarean Section)
23
GENITAL HERPES Infants Scrotum
24
VIRAL STD HPV HPV INFECTION CAUSED BY THE HUMAN PAPILLOMAVIRUS
HPV IS THE NAME OF A GROUP OF 30 VIRUSES THAT ARE SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED 20 MILLION IN U.S. INFECTED WITH HPV 50% OF SEXUALLY ACTIVE MEN/WOMEN ACQUIRE GENITAL HPV
25
HIGH RISK TYPES OF HPV MAY CAUSE ABNORMAL PAP TEST MAY LEAD TO CANCER OF CERVIX,VULVA, VAGINA, ANUS,PENIS
26
LOW RISK HPV MAY CAUSE MILD PAP TEST ABNORMALITIES
MAY CAUSE GENITAL WARTS: SINGLE/MULTIPLE GROWTHS THAT APPEAR ON GENITAL AREAS. MAY BE FLAT, RAISED OR CAULIFLOWER IN APPEARANCE
27
SYMPTOMS OF HPV MOST DO NOT KNOW THEY ARE INFECTED
VISABLE GENITAL WARTS PRE-CANCEROUS CHANGES IN CERVIX Symptoms include: Bleeding Difficulty in swallowing (if in the mouth or throat), urination (if in the urethra, penis or vagina) See a health professional immediately bleeding or skin changes around the genitals contact with an infected person unusual growths or bumps
28
VACCINE FDA APPROVED VACCINATION FOR FEMALES AGES 9 TO 26 TO PREVENT CERVICAL CANCER CAUSED BY HPV
29
GENTIAL WARTS APPEAR ON GENITALS PINK CAULIFLOWER PAINLESS
